Quick Review: Her

Well, here’s a fresh yet somewhat twisted intake of how romance—both platonically and sexually—can be. Set in the near future, Spike Jonze tries to portray to us the ups and downs of being romantically hooked to a piece of machine. Through Her, Jonze definitely challenges his audience in redefining their understanding of how broad the term ‘modern love’ may be. And how literal—as he’s involving an actual product of modern technology into the equation. Perhaps we’ve heard it countless times; how it’s possible for human relationships to develop and somehow change in this modern, digitalized age. However, Jonze actually takes us through the course of this movie to show how a lonely man can have a relationship through a machine; not with another person on the other side, but with the artificial intelligence of the machine itself. It definitely opens up our imaginations to realize not only how technology may have very far improvements in the future, but also how on a certain state of loneliness one might feel due to feeling alienated from one’s surroundings, one may actually consider having sex with an artificial intelligence—the details of which you may witness yourself by watching the film. Overall, Her gives an explorative perspective and a whole new understanding of modern love. Presented in a poetic, calming, and beautifully written storyline, this one from Jonze definitely has what it takes to be considered a well curated and relevantly eye-opening piece of art, especially in a time where it becomes more necessary to understand the possibilities and difficulties of engaging in modern love. Her (2013) Director: Spike Jonze Synopsis: A young man who feels lonely and empty with his life develops a romantic relationship with an operating system, only to discover that the relationship may not be so picture-perfect after all.

Sometime and Someplace with Cornelius

Japanese producer-turned recording artist Keigo Oyamada, better known as Cornelius, recently dropped a video for Sometime/Someplace. In this other peek into his latest album Mellow Waves, he takes viewers into a ‘dive’ in a world of his creation, where he’s seemingly floating into space in mellow and transcendent bass tunes. Often described as experimental with his music, Cornelius is perhaps proving it to be true with the depths taken into creating another ‘world’ with Sometime/Someplace. With the beats, the bass, all with a touch of his Shibuya flare, Cornelius is definitely prepping the audience to welcome his fresh come back after over a decade of break.

The End is Possibly Near for Childish Gambino

Could an artist loose the vibes of his musical distinction after a significant number of published albums or records? Are those just other words for losing inspiration? As a part of the audience, we may not have the answer. All that we may know is that we might just not be ready for Childish Gambino to leave us hanging for good. Donald Glover, who is better known in the music industry as Childish Gambino, announced recently at the Governor’s Ball that his next album might be his last. Stating that his continuation in the music industry would no longer be ‘necessary’, he felt he wouldn’t want to compromise his ‘punk’ approach to creating music after the successful rise of Awaken My Love, which is what continuing his persona as Childish Gambino might just do. According to Glover, Perhaps Glover is acting smart and efficient by leaving the stage for good at the peak of Childish Gambino’s fame. He said, Redbone may have gotten many hooked to Gambino’s chill, laid-back yet electrifyingly addicting takes on being “punk”. But perhaps, this way of quitting his musical persona may just allow Glover to keep with him the remains of Gambino’s golden days as what will forever be known of Childish Gambino in his audience’s memories. After all, we will never look back and point at him as “that one-time wonder that people just wasn’t interested in listening to anymore.”
