If you have followed the news the past 5 years, then you are probably familiar with the term "God Particle" from back in 2012, the year which saw the Higgs Boson, an essential part of creating mass in our universe, found in the Large Hadron Collider in CERN, Switzerland. It was a time when people feared a black hole would emerge from the collider and swallow our planet... good times.
Particle Fever is a documentary that captures the moments when the Large Hadron Collider was assembled and tested, to the moment where they announced the discovery of the Higgs Boson. The film follows the views of scientists, mainly theoretical physicists and experimental physicists, and their perspectives in the moments leading up to discovery of the Higgs Boson. It is an insight into the world of physics where we can see the how much aspiration, ambition, and perseverance they have in their career, and how the discovery of the nature of our universe can change their careers. This look into the minds of the physicists is interesting due to their relationship with the truth, where one can research a theory for decades only to be debunked by data. There are emotional moments found through out the film where you can see the determination it takes to pursue a theory for so many years, how nature decides if they are right through research technology, and how they can be humbled by data.
The film also follows members of the team at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) in the moments when the Large Hadron Collider tested its functionality, and of course, their first experiments, which searched for the Higgs Boson, a "holy grail" in completing the standard model of particle physics. Through their efforts we can see how massive of an undertaking the project was; the Large Hadron Collider is a 27 km underground ring crossing the borders of Switzerland and France with some parts that are about 5 stories tall; and how satisfying it must be to have it actually work and smash particles together near the speed of light.
Particle Fever is a thoroughly enjoyable watch, with animation that clearly explain some of the physics that is hard to grasp as a layman, although there are a few dry spots here and there when the filmmakers seem to be focusing too much on introspection. Particle Fever is a film that follows physicist in their search for the truth and shows us how amazing the works of scientists are, and how far their fields have come along. The film brings sheds light into appreciating our universe, how much we do not know about it, as well as how many amazing things we do.

If you didn't know, the German Season just had its grand start with a screening of Fritz Lang's classic film, Metropolis, accompanied musically by Film Orchestra Babelsberg in Cikini last weekend. With the program fully under way, The German Seasons will have three programs active through the month of September which are Football Fever in Indonesia Competition, German Cinema Film Festival, and Cultural Worlds. The first is a competition where you submit a video of support for the German football team for a chance to be flown to Hanover to watch the team play (submission ends the 11th so hurry!), the second is a screening of the many great German films made in recent years (check out our Focus article, "Selection: German Cinema" for recommendations, and the third is an exhibition that features preservations and restorations of artefacts from around the world which includes our own Borobudur temple.

The German Cinema Festival is back!
For the fourth time in a row, the festival brings the best of German film to Indonesia’s cinema screens. After its successful debut in 2012 and its sequels 2013 and 2014, the festival is one of the key events in Indonesia’s cultural calendar!
The programme contains a fine selection of 17 current, internationally acclaimed and award-winning German film productions, among them “Labyrinth of Lies“ by Giulio Ricciarelli, “The Salt of the Earth“ by Wim Wenders and Juliano Ribeiro Salgado, the German box-office film “Fack Ju Göhte“ (“Suck me Shakespeer“) or the latest film by Andreas Dresen “As We Were Dreaming“. With this cross-section of the German film landscape, the festival seeks to inspire the Indonesian audience and evoke interest in German Cinema – believing that the contemporary German movie scene is continuously changing and has to offer a lot of exciting, fresh views. All films will be made accessible to a wide audience through English subtitles. Screenings will be held across Indonesia, namely Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Makassar, Surabaya, Denpasar and Medan.

The exhibition “Cultural Worlds”, which is part of the Cultural Preservation Program of the Federal Foreign Office, presents impressive examples of 13 different projects, such as the restoration of Indonesia’s Borobudur temple, the preservation of manuscripts featuring ancient handwriting in Timbuktu, Mali, or the restoration of the old bazaar of Erbil in Iraq.
These projects give an idea of the immense cultural heritage worldwide that we all share and should strive to protect and preserve. The exhibition mainly shows projects to preserve historical cultural assets worldwide, but also highlights the preservation of German cultural heritage abroad.
The Cultural Preservation Program was established in 1981, with the aim to preserve cultural heritage worldwide and therefore make it accessible to the following generations. Its main goal is to strengthen a sense of national identity in the partner country and to foster cultural dialogue among partners. In conflict areas, these measures are an element of crisis prevention and support for reconstruction.
Nowherelandian Launches Visions of Mundane Madness: Drawings and Poems by Andri Nirmala and Dwiputri Pertiwi
Nowherelandian is a self-publisher based in Jakarta, Indonesia. Following the 2014 release of Hiatus, the independent unit will release its second publication, Visions of Mundane Madness, a collection of 50 drawings by illustrator Andri Nirmala and 50 poems by Dwiputri Pertiwi.
The idea behind Visions is summarized by the excerpt of the introduction below.
We begin with seeing, but we will eventually pick up our pens so that we can arrive at the end with more than two pairs of tired eyes. The hand-drawn pictures contained in this book are visual playgrounds. They were made to show you what we have seen, what we do not wish to see, as well as what we hope to see. But we also invite you to see through and around them: we would like you to show us what you see in them. The poems you will find here are our own attempt to reshape those things and non-things we have encountered in our waking hours and our dreams. Each line and the verses they amount to are just another way of seeing, of opening our eyes to the world through the enigmatic mechanism of language.
The essence of this book is interpretation. The first step requires converting both real and hypothetical experiences into pictures. These pictures will then become various combinations of symbols—chains of words, rows of sentences—that dictate the second stage of conversion. Layers and layers of meaning are added in the process.
To introduce the book, Nowherelandian would like to invite all appreciators of visual art and poetry to the following launching event:

Unit Rhythm & Blues asal Jakarta, Indische Party, terpilih sebagai band Indonesia yang memenangkan Converse Rubber Tracks Recording Session 2015.
Berawal dari informasi beberapa teman mengenai sesi rekaman Converse Rubber Tracks untuk tahun 2015, Indische Party mencoba peruntungan untuk mengikutsertakan karyanya lewat website resmi Converse Rubber Tracks, http://www.converse-music.com/rubbertracks/. Setelah menunggu sekitar satu bulan, tepatnya di pertengahan Juli 2015, akhirnya Indische Party email resmi berisi pemberitahuan mengenai terpilihnya mereka untuk berangkat menuju sesi rekaman bersama Converse Rubber Tracks.
Perlu menunggu sekitar tiga minggu sejak pengumuman resmi untuk mengetahui studio mana yang akan Indische Party tuju. Di pertengahan Agustus 2015, Indische Party menerima informasi bahwa mereka akan bertolak ke studio legendaris Abbey Road Studios, London, Inggris, untuk melakukan sesi rekaman. Setelah melewati proses komunikasi panjang via email dengan pihak Converse Amerika Serikat, akhirnya Indische Party berhasil merampungkan syarat administrasi dan dinyatakan berhak berangkat ke Abbey Road, London, Inggris, untuk melakukan sesi rekaman Converse Rubber Tracks bersama 84 artis terpilih lainnya yang disebar ke dua belas studio rekaman Converse Rubber Tracks.
Proses pemilihan pemenang Converse Rubber Tracks 2015 di Indonesia kali ini berbeda dengan tahun 2014 silam. Jika tahun lalu Converse Rubber Tracks diadakan lewat situs Whiteboard Journal (www.whiteboardjournal.com) dan penjurian dipilih oleh juri dari Indonesia, Converse Rubber Tracks 2015 diadakan dengan proses yang berbeda. Tahun ini, proses penjurian diadakan langsung oleh pihak Converse Amerika Serikat.
Seluruh personil Indische Party akan melakukan sesi rekaman selama dua hari pada 21-22 September 2015 di Abbey Road Studios bersama dengan additional keyboardist David Tarigan yang juga akan membantu proses rekaman selama di sana. Mengenai materi rekaman sendiri, Indische Party berencana untuk merekam materi-materi baru.
Di Abbey Road Studios, Indische Party akan bekerjasama dengan sound engineer Alan O’connell atau biasa dikenal dengan nama “alalal", seorang music producer dan sound engineer asal Inggris yang telah bekerjasama dengan Mark Ronson, Paul Epworth Erol Alkan, Bruno Mars, The Vaccines, Placebo, Duran Duran, Metronomy, Klaxons, The Future Heads, The Rapture, The Big Pink dan nama-nama besar lainnya (http://justmanaging.com/our-producers/alalal). Alan O’connell merupakan peraih “Recording Engineer of the Year” di tahun 2013 oleh UK Music Producers Guild dan juga nominator di ajang Grammy 2014.
Sekilas mengenai Indische Party. Indische Party adalah band yang berdiri di Jakarta pada tahun 2011. Band ini sarat akan nuansa musik tahun 1960-an dengan mengusung genre Rhythm & Blues, Rock dan Pop. Band ini berisikan Japs Shadiq, vocalist flamboyan yang juga gitaris dari band pop psychedelic ‘It’s Different Class’, Kubil Idris sebagai guitarist yang sudah lebih dulu dikenal pada unit new wave ibukota ‘The Upstairs’, Jacobus Dimas atau Iyo sebagai bassist yang juga tergabung dalam unit Rock & Roll ‘Karon n Roll’, dan yang terakhir pada posisi drummer di isi dengan gadis berpostur kecil, Tika Pramesti, dengan pukulannya yang jazzy. Empat sekawan ini merupakan sahabat dari bangku kuliah di Institut Kesenian Jakarta (IKJ).
Album debut Indische Party (selftitled) dirilis oleh label Demajors Independent Music Industry (DIMI) dan sudah disebarkanluaskan pada awal Juni 2013. Dari sepuluh lagu yang terdapat dalam album perdana, judul lagu “Waiting For You” di daulat menjadi single pertama mereka, menyusul “Sepeda" dan “Hey Girl”.
Indische Party sendiri saat ini telah merampungkan rekaman untuk album kedua yang rencananya akan dirilis pada akhir tahun 2015 ini. Di album kedua, eksplorasi musik tentu dilakukan oleh masing-masing personil. Dipandu oleh David Tarigan sebagai produser, Indische Party akan menyajikan album kedua lebih matang, baik dari sisi sound maupun musikalitas.

Hari Jumat, 21 Agustus 2015 yang lalu, brand TOMS Shoes dan RURU Radio bekerjasama dalam membuat pameran amal di Paviliun 28. Dengan mengundang seniman-seniman muda untuk berkarya menggunakan TOMS sebagai mediumnya, setiap karya dijual dan penghasilannya akan disumbangkan kepada Rumah Belajar Anak Bintang (RaJab), suatu program sosial TOMS.
One for One sendiri adalah judul kampanye amal dari brand sepatu TOMS yang telah lama diinisiasi. Salah satu representatif TOMS bercerita bahwa Blake Mycoskie, founder TOMS, dalam suatu perjalanan ke Argentina untuk acara The Amazing Race melihat sepatu tradisional petani Argentina, dan sepatu ini yang menjadi inspirasi desain utama TOMS. Di perjalanan itu juga, Blake melihat ketidaksejahteraan yang dialami oleh banyak penduduk, khususnya anak-anak, di Argentina. Dari situ, konsep "One for One" terlahir - dimana setiap pembelian sepasang sepatu TOMS, akan didonasikan satu pasang untuk anak-anak yang memerlukannya. Dari situ kampanye "One for One" berevolusi untuk menyalurkan amal dalam berbagai bentuk. Untuk Indonesia, TOMS bekerjasama dengan Rumah Belajar Anak Bintang, CSR dari Mitra Adi Perkasa yang memberi bimbingan belajar gratis bagi anak-anak dan juga orang tua mereka. Di acara One for One ini, juga di display beberapa karya desain anak-anak bimbingan Rumah Belajar Anak Bintang.
Pameran One for One ini dikurasi oleh Ayu Dila Martina, seorang seniman berbasis di ruangrupa yang juga merupakan bagian dari program Exist dari Dia Lo Gue. Pameran ini menampilkan 7 seniman, yakni Diela Maharani, El Gibranos, Marishka Soekarna, Nengiren, The Popo, Sarita Ibnoe, dan Syaiful Ardianto. Dengan sepatu TOMS sebagai medium utama seniman-seniman ini, terlihat bahwa alas kaki ini adalah focal-point dari setiap karya, dan hampir semua memodifikasi sepatunya dengan karakter seni masing-masing. Marishka Soekarna menambah layer bahan berbentuk kaki di atas sepatunya, boks sepatu dibuat menjadi kanvas lukisan. Sarita Ibnoe menata sepatu, tapestry, sketsa, serta kaos kaki di atas displaynya, membuat sebuah kolase yang mengingatkan akan suasana meja kerja. Syaiful Ardianto juga membuat kolase berisi artikel-artikel mengenai kaki, dan kolasenya dijadikan sebuah zine yang didistribusikan pada pembukaan pameran.
Karya Diela Maharani terfokus kepada modifikasi desain sepatunya , menggunakan warna warni serabut benang. "Petualangan Mimpi" oleh Nengiren menaruh sepatu-sepatu dengan embroidery wajah di sebuah peta 3D dan yang di tahan oleh benang-benang, sangat mengingatkan terhadap salah satu bagian dari Gulliver's Travels dimana protagonisnya diikat oleh manusia-manusia kecil. Seniman-seniman yang terlibat membawa karakter masing-masing ke dalam pameran ini, dan yang menyatukan karya mereka adalah penggunaan sepatu TOMS sebagai medium.
Pameran One for One ini juga di meriahkan oleh band Stars and Rabbit, yang baru saja merilis album perdananya. Performance mereka selalu menawan, dan kali ini tidak berbeda dengan karakter suara Elda yang sangat kuat dalam menangkap perhatian semua pengunjung pameran ini. Setelah Stars and Rabbit selesai berpentas, DJ Bondee mempersiapkan controllernya dan memeriahkan Paviliun 28 dengan lagu-lagu hiphop akhir 90an dan awal 2000an.

Son of another Indonesian great, multi-instrumentalist-Jack Lesmana, Indra Lesmana is a child prodigy who learned how to master the keys at a young age, with his first performances done at the age of ten to an audience of hundreds and thousands, and his first album released when he was 12 years old. From child to adulthood, Indra Lesmana has dedicated his life to music.
With currently over 50 albums released, his musical endeavors are not restricted to jazz, Indra Lesmana has also released a multitude of critically acclaimed pop records, winning a BASF Award for his meaningful pop numbers. Currently busy promoting the first LLW record, LLW being his modern jazz trio with bassist-Barry Likumahuwa and drummer-Sandy Winarta, Indra Lesmana spared some time our of his busy schedule to talk to W_Music about some highlights from his three decade-long career, LLW, and leaves the viewers and aspiring musicians some words of wisdom.
