Blink/Glance/Gaze

Over the weekend Dia.Lo.Gue Artspace hosted the opening of , an exhibition featuring the works of . The Mitha Budhyarto-curated exhibition invites the audience to consider their ways of seeing - the blink, the glance, the gaze - as the artists used these ideas to communicate their subjects. Yaya Sung's work is centered around human rights activism - addressing the subject of individuals that have either been killed or have disappeared for dissent, and done so primarily through the activism for transparency families of the victims have and continuously demand. Her Installation has videos (1 documentary, 5 staged) of Maria Katarina Sumarsih preparing a favorite meal of her son, Br. Noma Irawan, who was killed by the military in 1998. Another of her work, a mixed media installation , has visitors pay 100 Rupiah to view photographs and products relating to Memorial Kamis Payung Hitam, famous for Kamisan, a weekly thursday protest in front of the State Palace demanding justice for their dead or missing relatives. 20 photos of missing or murdered individuals can be observed in the room with paint partly covering their faces, perhaps speaking of their fading memory in the public eye. Angela Judiyanto addresses the subject of Blink/Gaze/Gaze through her personal observation and experiences. In , 15 being the average time a human blinks in a minute, she decides to immortalise moments that can be captured in that split-second. Bottles with words such as "uncertainty", "emotions", and "free" inscribed on them pour liquid with illustrations describing those scenes are laid out on tables. The bottle holding those moments are opened, poured and revealed to us. Her other installation, has small film slides arranged in an acrylic light table with illustrations and messages written on them, again speaking on her personal ideas and memories. As the theme of Blink/Glance/Gaze essentially talks about the varying degrees of attention achieved through the three described ways of seeing, Yaya Sung and Angela Judiyanto art takes a look at what we can experience in those moments as well as what we can perhaps miss.

Rocket Rain Website and Trailer

Good news, everyone! After exhibiting Toko Keperluan at the Singapore Biennale and releasing the music video for Jirapah's "Crowns" less than 24 hours ago, Anggun Priambodo has just made the Rocket Rain website active and has the film's trailer up for everyone to enjoy. The Rocket Rain Website is divided into ten parts, with sections including the trailer, the crew and cast, future roadshow dates, press kit, and reviews. One feature that you should try is the where Pak Kancil and Culapo (two of the main characters in the film) will answer your questions about family relations. So far the questions are surprisingly personal and the answers are (not surprisingly) a mixture between heartfelt wisdom and comedy. Click this highlighted link to go immediately to the page, and do send your questions in! One other section I became curious about is the "Listen" page, where GIF images of animals, people and objects play the film's soundbites when you hover over them. It's a just a little feature that is perhaps unnecessary but quite entertaining, to be honest... spent about 10 minutes just playing them. Do check out the website, and don't forget to watch the trailer embedded above. Rocket Rain Website Rocket Rain Facebook Rocket Rain Twitter

Jirapah “Crowns” Music Video Off the Rocket Rain OST

Last week, we posted a blogpost about the upcoming Original Soundtrack & Music Inspired by Rocket Rain album. The album will contain the featured songs in the film, it will also feature some songs that are inspired by Rocket Rain-a feature film by the director/visual artist Anggun Priambodo. The first single of the album was revealed today - a song by Jirapah titled “Crowns”. Another good news is that you can also watch the video as it goes online earlier today. Directed by Anggun Priambodo, the video contains vintage footage of a Sundanese wedding ceremony. The video for Crowns is a perfect music video as the song and the visuals support each other. It combines the melancholic tone of the song with the vintage footage of the wedding ceremony. The combination of the musical and the visual give viewers a romantic feeling when watching the video. In addition to Jirapah's Crowns, there will be more musicians contributing in the "Original Soundtrack & Music Inspired by Rocket Rain album" such as White Shoes and The Couples Company, Zeke Khaseli, The Kuda, Frigi Frigi and many more. So be sure to check out Rocket Rain's Facebook page to get more information about the upcoming album and probably the upcoming music video as well. Blink / Glance / Gaze – An Exhibition

Dia.lo.gue Artspace presents an exhibition entitled . This exhibition will feature two of Jakarta’s young, talented artists: and . These artists’ artworks are curated by Mitha Budhyarto. Blink / Glance / Gaze is an outcome of the artists’ exploration about the fact that we capture things through our eyes everyday. We might not be aware that this is essential as it affects our way to perceive our surroundings, whether it is a blink, glance, or gaze. In Blink / Glance / Gaze, Yaya will display her artworks: the photographs that based on her exploration of the act of “kamisan,” a non-violent protest that regularly held by Kontras every Thursday (Kamis) in front of the State Palace. Angela, on the other hand, works on illustrations that reflect the complexities of personal narratives through mixed media. Through their artworks, Angela and Yaya tell us that there is a strong relationship between how we perceive what we see and our memories and yearnings. This exhibition invites us to ponder about the way we see and interpret everything we see everyday, throught the blink, the glance, and the gaze. This exhibition will be held for a month in Dia.lo.gue Artspace, Kemang as an extension of its annual programme, Exi(s)t. 2013. Also, there will be an artist talk titled “Ways of Seeing” that will be held on the same day.

Anggun Priambodo’s “Toko Keperluan” at Singapore Biennale

If you live in Singapore or in the surrounding area you will probably know that the 4th Singapore Biennale is currently happening. Established in 2016, the current biennale is organized by the Singapore Art Museum of the National Heritage Board, and its title, "If the World Changes", summarises the theme of response to the speed of transformation we are currently experiencing in Southeast Asia. One of the artist invited is none other than visual artist Anggun Priambodo, who is exhibiting an installation called "Toko Keperluan" (A Shop for Necessities). Recreating the typical street corner shop and filling it with items that aren't necessities, Anggun comments on consumerism, critiquing the reasoning of our buying impulses. The shop sells anything from vinyl records, puppets, leggings to a boxing helmet. Toko Keperluan isn't simply a for viewing, one can actually purchase what are on display, and according to our photographer, Natasha Gabriella Tontey, visitors are quick to buy the items... so I suppose the visitors' behavior exhibit exactly what Anggun was critiquing. Be sure to visit the Singapore Biennale and Anggun Priambodo's Toko Keperluan, and do Rocket Rain. Rocket Rain Website Rocket Rain Facebook Rocket Rain Twitter
