The second Indonesian Netaudio Festival (#INF2) will be held in Bandung on 14 – 16 November 2014, following the first Indonesian Netaudio Festival, which was successfully held in the city of Yogyakarta on 16 – 17 November 2012 to align with the 5th anniversary of Yes No Wave Music. This festival is meant to establish online connections, as well as to instill an ‘offline’ experience to the actors, observers, and lovers of netaudio—Internet based audio activities. #INF2 is organized by Sorge Sindikasi, KKBM Unpar, IFI Bandung, and Indonesian Netlabel Union.
Internet has become an effective means to disseminate knowledge and information, and one of the ways is by using netaudio. Netaudio activities such as netlabels (Internet based record labels) and online streaming are increasingly being enjoyed by people worldwide. One of the prominent characters of Internet is the presence of free culture, a culture that enables the access for people to naturally use, develop, and distribute existing knowledge and information.
Raising people’s awareness on free culture has become pivotal in distributing and producing better, more sustainable, and independent bodies of knowledge. The information campaign and awareness raising on this free culture will be realized through the Indonesian Netaudio Festival, which also encompasses offline activities for netaudio actors and lovers, thus encourgaing them to further contribute to their environment and to the society in general.

“In Praise of Copying – Marcus Boon” book discussion with Nuraini Juliastuti (KUNCI Cultural Studies Center) & Budi Warsito (Kineruku) Marcus Boon’s book, “In Praise of Copying” is the second translation issue from KUNCI Publication after Lawrence Lessig’s book, “Free Culture: How Big Media Uses Technology and the Law to Lock Down Culture and Control Creativity” (2011). These books are distributed for free. The third book that is currently in the editing stage is “The Wealth Of Networks: How Social Production Transforms Markets and Freedom (2007)”. The translation and publication of these three books is part of KUNCI Cultural Studies Center’s research project titled “Media and Technology Convergence in Indonesia: A Cultural Perspective Case Study on Mobile Culture and Creative Digital Productions.”
‘In Praise of Copying’ describes the penetration of the so-called ‘copying’ in contemporary culture. Starting from Louis Vuitton wallets to Harry Potter: you can think of anything, and most likely it has been copied somewhere. Working comparatively across cultures and times, Marcus Boon undertakes an examination of what this word means, and why it fills us with fear and fascination. He argues that the dominant legal-political structures that define copying today obscure much broader processes of imitation that have constituted human communities for ages and continue to shape various subcultures today. Boon seeks to show how and why copying works, what the sources of its power are, and the political stakes of renegotiating the way we value copying in the age of globalization.
Participants of this talk are expected to read at least two chapters: Chapter 2, “Copia, or, The abundant style”, and Chapter 7, “Copying as Appropriation”. The electronic files of this book can be downloaded from KUNCI Cultural Studies Center’s website (http://kunci.or.id/collections/memuliakan-penyalinan/). This book is also available in Kineruku (Jalan Hegarmanah 52 Bandung).

“Music, Technology, and Society: Changes and Unchanged Matters”
The intersection between music and technology development has become a space to form new practices in the production, storage, distribution, and consumption of music. For the musicians, the intersection also opens new ways of artistic production. Departing from the new spaces that emerge from the intersection, this discussion tries to discover and dismantle aspects that have changed and not changed; or aspects of what seemed to have changed but have actually not changed radically. Featuring Robin Malau, Arie Mindblasting, and Felix Dass, this discussion is also expected to foresee new forms of cross-linkage between music, technology, and society in the future.
