Mudah untuk melupakan relasi budaya dan sejarah antar negara Asia Tenggara yang sepertinya mudah terpecah belah. Tanpa menyinggung proses asimilasi yang memang sudah berjalan dengan seiringnya waktu, harus diakui jati diri negara-negara Asia Tenggara lebih didominasi budaya barat dan Tionghoa. Proyek Condition Report, sebuah program pengembangan kuratorial Jepang dan Asia Tenggara yang pertama kali digagas oleh Japan Foundation Asia Center pada tahun 2015, berusaha untuk membahas pertanyaan itu dengan mengambil tema “What Is Southeast Asia?” Proyek ini mempunyai dua fase: pertama adalah 4 pameran kolaboratif di Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, dan Bangkok yang melibatkan 21 kurator dari Asia Tenggara. Bagian kedua adalah 12 proyek seni rupa yang akan di organisir oleh kurator-kurator muda Asia Tenggara di masing-masing negara mereka. Dengan fase pertama sudah dilewati, fase kedua sudah dimulai dan pameran “Resipro(vo)kasi” adalah salah satu dari rangkaian 12 proyek seni rupa tersebut. Galeri Nasional Indonesia bekerja sama dengan Japan Foundation Asia Center untuk mengadakan pameran bertajuk “Resipro(vo)kasi: Praktik Seni Rupa Terlibat di Indonesia Pascareformasi” pada tanggal 5 hingga 19 Oktober 2017. Pameran ini bermaksud merepresentasikan perkembangan praktik seni rupa terlibat dalam kurun waktu pasca-reformasi hingga sekarang sebagai praktik penciptaan karya ‘alternatif’ dari dominasi karya individual berbasis studio. Bayu Genia Krishbie, sang kurator pameran, adalah salah satu peserta proyek Condition Report dan juga asisten kurator di Galeri Nasional Indonesia. “Resipro(vo)kasi” bisa diartikan dengan dua cara, “resiprokasi dan provokasi” ataupun “provokasi resiprokal”, yaitu metode komunikasi dan pertukaran gagasan dua arah secara egaliter antara perupa dan publik yang berrelasi langsung dalam proses penciptaan karya/peristiwa seni rupa, —disadari atau tidak— seolah saling memprovokasi satu sama lain. Sepuluh seniman individual dan kolektif akan menampilkan 10 karya dengan pendekatan mereka masing-masing seperti fotografi, instalasi, object, dokumentasi video, arsip, dan performance di ruang pameran. Juergen Tueller adalah seorang fotografer yang terkenal akan estetika yang minimalis dan ‘amatir,’ dengan keterampilan yang dipercayai oleh banyak desainer serta majalah fashion kelas atas. Di antara semua hal yang telah Teller lakukan, tidak ada yang lebih terkenal daripada kerja samanya dengan desainer modern Viviane Westwood. Untuk merayakan kolaborasi yang sudah sering dilakukan selama 1 dekade lebih, Westwood membuka pameran foto yang menunjukkan karya-karya kolaborasi mereka berdua selama ini di toko utamanya di New York. Foto-foto yang dipamerkan kebanyakan adalah foto Westwood bersama suaminya, Andreas Kronthaler, yang diambil oleh sang fotografer selama bertahun-tahun bekerja bersama. Tueller menyeleksi foto-foto yang memang paling menunjukkan kepribadian subversif Viviane Westwood serta kreativitas yang terlihat sangat dipercayai oleh Westwood. Selain itu, pameran ini akan menghadirkan katalog dan koleksi yang kedua pihak sudah kerjakan bersama-sama. Tueller, kepada Vogue, menyampaikan bahwa dia bahagia bekerja sama dengan Westwood dan suaminya. Kebebasan yang diberikan oleh sang desainer selama bertahun-tahun berkolaborasi, sangat dihargai oleh Tueller dan dia ingin merayakannya serta menunjukkannya kepada publik. Pameran ini diadakan di toko utama Viviane Westwood di New York semenjak tanggal 6 September hingga Oktober 2017.

Sonic skipper is what he’s known for. Not just because of the sonic skips that can be found in his music, but also from the exuded impression and nuance out of it. Dreems is his name and together with his insatiable thirst of unique sound from across the globe, he created a cult called Multi Culti. We had a chance to talk to him via email and asked some questions about his mission in making music, to his latest establishment with Kris Baha, Die Orangen. It is juicy! Multi Culti, which been providing exotic sonic sound since 2013. How did the interest towards exotic world music start? It was always there with both of us. However it was something that was a lot more personal and celebrated less through our DJ sets and production and more through our personal adventures together and time away from the dance-floor. Both of us had been fortunate enough to have travelled a lot through our lives and had exposure to disparate musics from lands far and wide and that informed us along the way I feel. Our love for music is insatiable. We are always looking in every dark corner (the internet, record stores, family & friends basements, recycling bins, etc) in every place we go for new sounds and sonic adventures. It might seem cliche now to say this, but I think it’s always been the same mission - to create a journey. Maybe it would be more appropriate to say “a trip” these days, as the music takes more and more cues from the psychedelic realm. Hypnotised or not, it’s always lovely to have someone hold your hand and guide you through new and unknown worlds, especially if they have the lay of that land. (Laughs) Very close. I do like the idea that we are “laid-back” though as that really suits our background disposition. It’s actually a melted genrefication of krautrock and outback. I would like to think that you could afford yourself the time to get atop a sand-dune and stare across a vast-plane with a cold beer in hand. However, if you are not situated close to such a desired scenario, maybe a tree-house with a cup of tea would suffice. JK has been a long musical hero for us over at Multi Culti. We have been fans of his tracks after discovering him a few years ago. Kris Baha was the catalyst for making the deeper connection - he is one that always has his finger on the electrical pulses emitting from earth’s wildest beings. My preparation these days is really different. I like to not think at all about what I’m going to play. Going in with a clear mind and opening my mind body to the vibrations that are felt when I come into the room always help me make the best decisions. I am a food nutcase. FOOD FOOD FOOD.
