Gimme 5: Simple Symmetry Gives Us Their Influences for “Gilgamesh”

From The Epic of Gilgamesh to L’Homme Orchestre soundtrack.

by Ghina Sabrina

Comprised of the two Russian brothers, Sasha and Sergey Lipsky, the production duo Simple Symmetry is known for their unique electronic sound that combines rhythm and experimentations. Listening to their music, you’ll know that their influences extend beyond reach. One could not just pinpoint where exactly they got it from, as they said themselves, it came from the streets of Moscow as well as the people and cultures of the world. They’ve recently released their newest EP “Gilgamesh” under the label Disco Halal, and the brothers had given us 5 of their influences for this album.

The Epic of Gilgamesh

Surprisingly but the first and main inspiration for us in fact was The Epic of Gilgamesh itself – the oldest epic tale in the world written 1500 years before Homer wrote the Iliad. Friendship and enmity, immortality and death, hate and love, civilization versus the wild – not a big difference between 2000 BC and 2019 A.D. right?

Inigo Vontier

Number two inspiration is our inspirational friend Inigo Vontier. We already had two different versions of Gilgamesh and both of them didn’t satisfy us until he joined the game. After his intervention in the track we realized that the direction he chose gave much more life and drama to the tune. Excited by this new vibe of Gilgamesh we decided to get the things even bigger and created this final kinda ‘trance’ part of the track – we will talk about that in more detail below.

Electric Universe – Luna Overdrive

We picked up this classic to illustrate the inspiration for the final part of Gilgamesh track, but actually we could pick up a dozen of different psychedelic trance tunes from the beginning of the 90s – you understand what we’re talking about now, don’t you?

Emerson, Lake and Palmer – The Gnome (Pictures at An Exhibition)

Every time we listen to these Hammond chords (starting from 3:20) of the track FIGHT – there’s something so Russian in them. Something inspired maybe by Modest Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at An Exhibition”, or more accurately Emerson, Lake and Palmer’s version of his classical work. Check out their “The Gnome” (0:23).

L’Homme Orchestre – Kung Fu

Our friend from Paris Adrien Albou is insisting that FIGHT is 100% inspired by this OST of one of our favorite French comedies with incredible Louis de Funes. Considering it’s so hard and painful to dissect your own music – let’s just agree with Adrien and finish our ridiculous analyze with this amazing piece of visual and dance art. whiteboardjournal, logo
