Street photography is a growing trend in the world. It offers approaches that have given influences in the fashion and advertising industry. Nevertheless, street photography also creates and faces some ethical issues. Some cities in the world are starting to prohibit people from taking pictures in a public space because it’s considered as disturbance to privacy.

The class will be held at Komunitas Salihara, with a couple of field trips to Jakarta’s Old Town area for practice. Participants are required to bring their own cameras—at least pocket cameras. Mobile phones’ cameras are not recommended. Participants will receive study materials and a certificate.

Erik Prasetya is one of the most influential photographers in Asia according to Invisible Photographer Asia’s 20 Most Influential Asian Photographers 2012 survey. He has been working as a street photographer for at least 25 years.

Participants are introduced to works of foreign and Indonesian street photographers. Participants will be given home works.

Saturday, March 14, 2015: On Composition, Lighting, Understanding, and Presentation-Representation
Class materials in the second meeting will be discussed along with the participants’ home works.

Saturday, March 21, 2015: On Juxtaposition, Layering, and Creating Stories through Photos
Participants will be guided through some theoretical materials by directly applying them on the field. This session will be held in the Old Town.

Saturday, March 28, 2015: Group Photography
A discussion on the works and guide in selecting and editing pictures, and then followed by an outdoor activity in the Old Town.
