This awesome 14th edition mix of (this one focuses on the year 1992) from the good chaps at is not to be slept on.
"After a tour of the 80s, the crew digs into the genre as it becomes a pop culture phenomenom in the 90s. Starting with the jazzy samples of the Native Tongues movement in the early part of the decade, with groups like A Tribe Called Quest and the Jungle Brothers, the series moves into the gangster pop of the East Coast/West Coast rivalry. Theres plenty of Biggie, Tupac, Dre, Snoop, Wu-Tang, Jay-Z, club classics, forgotten singles, the start of the indie era with Rawkus, and flavors from different parts of the country as the genre expanded to the South."

Following up on their excellent series on local dance-music scenes throughout the world (they've already done videos on Detroit, Johannesburg, Berlin, Paris and Bristol), are back with their latest installment on the New York City underground dance scene. Definitely worth a watch.
"Not too long ago it looked like New York's glory days as a center for dance music had passed. As the birthplace of disco and hip-hop and the home of legendary nightclubs like the Paradise Garage, Limelight and Twilo, the city has long been part of the cultural fabric. But as the notoriously grimy city of the late 20th century transformed into the sleek and hyper-gentrified metropolis of today, its thriving underground lost its foothold."
For a Friday treat, here's a pretty dope and seminal hip-hop documentary, produced by Dutch television way back in 1986. It's a fun and sometimes eerie look on how the culture was back in the mid-1980s. Includes interviews and appearances by , , , and It also features lots and lots of gold chains, Kangols, beatboxing and hands waving in the air.
In case you missed the severe hype, are about to release a new album entitled in May 2013. Luckily for us, they've released '' a single featuring and which you can view above. Needless to say, as most things are with Pharrell and Nile, it's pretty damned funky.
You may have not heard of the guy, or recognise his face, but you'd most likely know his music, be it in the form of his supreme disco/funk/R&B band , or as a producer and arranger from people as varied as , or even . This recent BBC4 documentary delves into the career of the NYC based musician , from his funk and disco youth up to his hit-making powers as a producer in the 1980s. Featuring and many more.
Another big shout-out to for the link.
W_Music’s Cliff Notes is a monthly music event at Kemang’s Cafe Mondo with a simple goal: a place where people can get-together and relax while nodding their heads to various styles of music booming through the speakers. Each month will feature W_Music resident spinners in the form of Bergas and Fat Cat Ffonz plus a well-selected guest performer, disc jockey, or musician who will be asked to share their taste of music with all. Head boppers, finger snappers and hip shakers, this one is for you!
Gratts is what you would call a DJ, not a producer-cum-DJ-for-the-sake-of-scoring-dollars-and-chicks, although the latter is still up for debate. His enthusiasm and knowledge of underground dance music led him to curate the house section for the website in Brussels, together with long-time friend Kong. Gratts also hosts ‘’, dedicated to togetherness and deep, timeless house music. Throughout the years, Gratts has had the honour of sharing the decks with djs like , and among others, as well as playing warm up sets for gigs by or. To listen to Gratts on the wheels-of-steel, do head down to W_Music’s Cliff Notes Vol.5.
