The masses, terror, and violence are negative experiences that continue to overshadow the democratization process. These threats continue to grow as more people become marginalized by globalization today—people who are ready to be sacrificed as “the masses” in the fight between friends and foes, either economically, politically, ideologically, or in religious settings. Modern issues of masses, terror, and violence can be traced from Hitler to al-Qaeda and ISIS.
F. Budi Hardiman is lecturer at STF Driyarkara, Jakarta. He received his Ph.D. from Hochschule für Philosophie, München. He has written several books on philosophy, such as Humanisme dan Sesudahnya (2012) and Demokrasi Deliberatif (2009), as well as a book on Jürgen Habermas’s ideas Menuju Masyarakat Komunikatif (2009), and Kritik Ideologi (2004).
