Body Festival

by Athina Ibrahim

BODY FESTIVAL is a group exhibition of three female artists, which peels off the bone of contention surrounding three major organs of the human body: the head, the legs, and the waist. Annisa Utami, a graduate from the Graphic Art Department at Fine Art and Design Faculty of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) (2011), explores the human head and its relations to the brain activities inside the human body through an interactive videogame based work. She created a control panel and a program, which is specifically designed to resemble how the brain works. Natasha Gabriella Tontey, a graduate from the Visual Communication Design Department at Pelita Harapan University (2011), observes the human body within the leg area by constructing an installation work, made from a compilation of objects that are arranged as a collage. The audience will playfully enjoy her work by experiencing the body movement as they walk on the piece. Rega Ayunda Putri, a graduate from the Sculpture Art Department of Fine Art and Design Faculty at ITB (2012), is using sculpture mixed with audio visual to explore the human waist. Her piece is located inside a tailor-made space in order to share the “motherly” sensation that is brought on by her work for the audience. Though the BODY FESTIVAL exhibition, these three young artists celebrate their appreciations and their perceptions surrounding the human anatomy.

RURU Gallery invites the artist Ika Vantiani to curate this exhibition. She is a multi-talented artist who is better known through her works with numerous zines, collage products, and crafts. Since 2001, she actively produced, exhibited, and distributed her own merchandises, as well as organizing workshops on zine and art merchandising. Before becoming the curator of BODY FESTIVAL, she has curated the Art on Postcard Exhibition in 2009, which was also held at RURU Gallery.
