Artist Talk “Ways of Seeing”
at 4:30 PM
Exhibition Nov 2 – Dec 2, 2013
What is captured by our eyes in a blink, a glance, and a gaze? How do we perceive the world according to three different ways of seeing?
This exhibition presents new works by Angela Judiyanto and Yaya Sung as they explore these questions. Here, Yaya creates photography based works that delve into the act of “kamisan” – a political activism that takes place every thursday ourside the State Palace in Jakarta – while Angela works with mixed-media illustration to reflect upon the complexities of personal narratives.
Both of the artists’ works show that perception – what we see – is never inseparable from one’s memories, dreams, and desires. Often, we also discover that we never simply ‘see’ what surrounds us, but that ‘seeing’ also implies ‘imagining’: how things could be otherwise.
Together, Angela Judiyanto and Yaya Sung invite us to rethink the way we see the world around us – through the blink, the glance, and the gaze.
