Awesome Tapes From Africa
Since 2006, Brian Shimkovitz’s Awesome Tapes From Africa blog has been shedding light on obscure and wonderful sounds from across the continent. As a DJ he brings the blog to life with 2-3 hour sets blending folkloric pop, left-field dancefloor gems and hip-hop bangers he’s collected on African marketplace finds. Traveling from club to festival to DIY space, Awesome Tapes From Africa DJ sets celebrate the music and musicians whose cassettes Shimkovitz has collected over the years.
In 2011 ATFA developed into a critically acclaimed vinyl label, re-releasing records by African artists including Bola, Dur-Dur Band, Hailu Mergia and just this week Penny Penny. The label plays an essential role in furthering Brian’s mission to build an international audience for African music through touring and re-issues.
Drawing on his vast African cassette archive—which includes highlife, fuji, benga, tsonga disco, soukous, hip-hop, rhumba and ethio-soul, among countless other genres—his role now combines that of educator, promoter and selector, finding him DJ across the world. HIs DJ sets on twin tape decks explore deep, regional sounds using analog-anchored agility not heard/seen anywhere else.
Perera Elsewhere
Singer / Songwriter/ Producer Sasha Perera who DJs under the name Mother Perera is probably most known for her role as vocalist & songwriter in the Bass music – mongrel pop band Jahcoozi. ‘Perera Elsewhere’ is the new solo project of the London-born, Berlin-based artist who helped to establish a foundation of Grime and Dubstep in Berlin with her series of Grimetime parties and radio show years back. Her work with Jahcoozi experimented with multiple textures of electronic music, collaborations with an wide array of artists including travels to Kenya to work with local MCs. The band have a tour calender that most would envy.
Perera Elsewhere takes a step back from her known sound of bass shaking electronica to a more minimal and acoustic feel and summons lost souls and presage of tomorrow in her craft. Acting on instinct rather than mathematics, incorporating organic elements that compliment and co-exist with robotics, carefully reserving space for her haunting yet soothing vocal passes…these are the bricks and mortar of Perera’s waking dreams. From the grit of dark club to the absorption of indigenous sounds & styles along her travels, Perera melds these inspirations into her own semi-acoustic, abstract and pop-tinged bliss.
Prophetic revelations put to tape. A message in a bottle delivered through cryptic vocals laid to a smoky atlas, guiding followers to a new translation of the world as we know it. These are just shadows of the sentiment that Perera Elsewhere delivers on ‘Everlast’, her 12-track debut LP for Friends of Friends in Los Angeles this October. On the lead single “Bizarre” she navigates the haunting melody flawlessly with the lyrics “its been a long time by the look of things// long time money’s running everything// the same 10 families that run this show// friends with the president, friends with the pope”, signing her name in the cement of her beliefs. Come October 28th, the world will bear witness to the sounds and sights of Perera Elsewhere. With a feature from Gonjasufi, as well as remixes slated from the likes of Hype Williams, Maria Minerva, Nautiluss and Kyson, the sum of the parts equals up to a concentrated plume of aural frankincense.
As an Insatiable music junkie, Sasha has been collecting music since she was a kid in London. She started out overdubbing tape cassettes she’d bought on the market or stuff she heard on the radio. Although she’d been collecting various physical formats of electronic music for over 10 years, it wasnt until 2008 that she started Djing with Ableton. Having worked with the software in the studio with Jahcoozi (Kitty Yo, Bpitch Control,) as well as on her own productions as Perera Elsewhere (FoF label), it seemed the most logical way to DJ.
Big on contemporary electronic dance music that pushes the boundaries, Mother Perera sets are known for playing various forms of cerebral bass music. Her highly personalised DJ sets reflect her own polyrhythmic musical tendancies. 2step/garage, , house, dub, techno , post-everything-step, dungeon bass, bashment, IDM , footwerk, juke and even a bit of good old jungle. With a soft spot for percussion, syncopation, rich sound textures, shifting basslines and straight-up freshness, she coaxes her audience into embarking on a journey into the world of the sounds she loves.
