As a small teaser to what people can expect from his eagerly-awaited guest spot at W_Music’s Cliff Notes later on in the month, Aardvarck did his famed chopping and slicing routine to create this eclectic masterpiece: an exclusive ‘Hello Jakarta’ mix involving many exciting things that defines his spinning style. While the mix is too varied to detail all the different genres involved, you can expect a bit of jazz, quite a lot of hip-hop, a few soul skits, some club bangers, a pinch of reggae, a healthy injection of dubstep & jungle as well as a steady flow of funk.
In South Africa, the Aardvark, sometimes called “antbear”, “anteater”, “Cape anteater” “earth hog” or “earth pig”, is a medium-sized, burrowing, nocturnal animal that feeds almost exclusively on ants and termites. Yet in Bali, despite living in his own funky lair, Aardvarck the DJ is one of Holland’s best-known and experienced underground spinners/producers. Having released records on numerous collectives and labels, namely Rush Hour Recordings, Delsin, Eat Concrete and faux-Brazilian LA-Based collective Mochilla, he has also released a host of mixtapes for celebrated publications such as FACT Magazine and Little White Earbuds. Aarvarck’s avant-garde career of hip hop, disco, funk, jazz & new wave goes back more than 25 years and can also count Thom Yorke of Radiohead as a fan!
