My love affair with Cambodian music started by listening to Dengue Fever many moons ago. Through them, I was introduced to the wonderful world of Cambodian psychedelic rock, pop, and folk that was flourishing before the Khmer Rouge. Sinn Sisamouth and Ros Sereysothea are two of the most prominent and prolific artists of their time along with Pan Ron, Houy Meas, and other artists that made it into this compilation. Sadly, most, if not all, of these talented musicians disappeared during the reign of Khmer Rouge. Such a tremendous loss for the country's most treasured talents. Come Here Cambo serves as a homage to the eclectic Cambodian sound in the 60's and 70's, in addition to Dengue Fever rounding off the selection by covering Genjer Genjer, a controversial Indonesian song relating to communism back in the days. 01. It would be wise and accurate to label Jonathan ‘Ojon’ Kusuma as one of the modern pioneers of Indonesian electronic music. Through his partnership with Aryo Adhianto they formed Space System, one of Jakarta’s most respected electronic/disco/house/psych groups, which saw their records released on Glasgow’s Optimo Music and Italy’s Pizzico Records. Having had experience in playing metal, punk and electro-disco as well as having a sizeable record collection, Ojon has also recently established one of Jakarta’s best online vinyl stores, Akamady Music. To listen to Ojon spin his favourite records, do head down to W_Music’s Cliff Notes Vol.4.
