Maverick “Reloop” stream on Bandcamp

Dede from wastedrockers once said, “I can say that Wing is one of Jakarta’s wonderkid in term of music”, a certified endorsement to Wing Narada’s grandeur in music making and producing. Listening to Maverick’s Reloop is a convenient verification of that statement. As a moniker that stood out among Wing’s other music projects, Maverick offers a unique experience to the listeners. Every release, Maverick explores the different area from the unconventional side of electronic music with a sip of hip-hop on here and there. As the follow-up to the previously released Preloop EP, Reloop easily exceeding expectations with its eclectic sequence. Every song has different musical influences, yet still share a coherent character that resembles Maverick’s identity. This album will be released physically on 18th April 2015 by the Bandung based label, Orange Cliff records to celebrate the record store day. Designers’ Response: Jakarta City

Last Saturday, Coworkinc in Kemang became the place for graphic designers to see the works of their peers in an exhibition titled Designer's Response: Jakarta City. Organized by ADGI Jakarta, the exhibition featured the works of 10 designers responding to the conditions in Indonesia's capital city. Opened by head of ADGI Jakarta chapter Rege Indrastudianto, at about 7 PM the exhibition was officially opened and throngs of graphic designers curiously observed each poster and the issues that the designers wanted to address. There were various topics discussed in the exhibition. Cecil Mariani's "Upacita" proposed a platform for a sustainable economy, Agra Satria's "Siapa Suru Datang Djakarta" presents his love and hate relationship with Jakarta as a city full of gritty hardships and opportunities, Henricus Linggawidjaja's "Dilarang Kencingi Ibukota" addresses the city's congestion by creating a poster devoid of text and doesn't force viewers to read or understand its content, while DGI talks about the role of graphic designers in Jakarta in their "Lending Vision" poster. It is quite interesting to see which issues the designers decided to raise, their response, and their style of choice in presenting their ideas. The exhibition continues until the 11th of April, do make your visit and see these designers' visions. Every Frame a Painting

Thanks to a Facebook post by Heart Attack host Januar Kristianto, I was pleasantly introduced to the Every Frame a Painting, a Youtube Channel dedicated to analyzing films from an editor's standpoint. Presented by Tony Zhou, the channel has videos with specific themes and subjects - such as the quadrant system and lateral tracking shots, as well as focusing on specific directors' works, such as Satoshi Kon's use of editing to portray space and time, Jackie Chan using rhythm to create fight scenes, and Michael Bay's ultra-flashy "Bayhem" style. So far, Every Frame a Painting has 17 videos published, and hopefully, with its growing number of viewers, there will be more added to its library. Remembering Slamet Abdul Sjukur (1950-2015)

It was 12 o’clock on a sunny afternoon, I was looking for an address in the Keputran area, Surabaya. After tracing on some alley and asking for direction, a bare-chested little boy guides me into a house with a unique front, painted white with a door-without any window. The door itself is quite uncommon, it has no handle, only a unique wiring that serves as a doorbell. Just a moment after I rang the bell, the host open the door himself and then greeted me with a bright and energetic smile. Entering the house, the air is clement, even though there are a lot of antique products on the corner of the rooms. One of the antique product is a Steinmeyer piano with a stack of a composition book that has the host’s name on the cover, it says, “Composition by Slamet Abdul Sjukur”. Once dubbed as the founding father of contemporary Indonesian music, Slamet Abdul Sjukur already shared countless of transcendental music composition. His unconventional approach to composing music is an epiphany to music, not only to the local scene but also to the world. The abundant number of awards from around the world is the definite prove of his contribution. That afternoon, we talked about how he perceive music, where he reveal a new insight on the definition of music, “Music is not the matter of just human creativity, and it’s how we perceive the sound of the universe, so that the sound of the universe has a deeper meaning than just a sound. To me, that’s what music is. Many people consider thunder and heavy rain as something that just passes by. For me, that kind of moment is also a music because of its pressure and accent. That’s music for people who really cares about music. No matter how people play a musical instrument, if it doesn’t connect with the listeners, then for me it’s not music at all.” With all of his experience and wisdom, Slamet Abdul Sjukur continue to keep his dedication and love for music until his very last day. His brilliant mind, modest presence, and cheerful attitude will be sorely missed. Rest in Peace, Slamet Abdul Sjukur.
