While it may not be the most intriguing way of describing a selective work of art undoubtedly worthy of celebration, perhaps there’s more to this inaugural exhibition at the upcoming Remai Modern’s opening than the title lets on. A collection of some 8,000 works that were previously in the former Mendel Art Gallery, joined by a selective number of Picasso linocuts and ceramics that are to be displayed upon the opening are intended to trigger visitors into raising several questions on modernity and reality.
“What is modern? Can art confront reality? What is urgent and why?” are some of them. Perhaps a more conversational experience is what ‘Field Guide’ aims for. And perhaps, in a world of constantly evolving understanding of reality, met with the contradictive stillness of the limited ability of our minds to perfectly grasp the entire picture, a mind-trip into the thought-triggering collection of art that speaks through ‘Field Guide’ is just what’s needed. Who knows? Maybe ‘Field Guide’ could be the unexpected guide that provides its visitors with a wider range of ideas and possibilities of what it means to be modern, and just how art is supposed to have more to do with reality than realized.
