The New iPhone 5c

As we all know, Apple recently launched their newest iPhone series: iPhone 5s with the classic iPhone look with three choice of colors: gold, silver and ‘space gray’ along with its sibling; the plastic, curvier iPhone 5c which will be available in four vibrant colors including pink, blue, yellow, green, while they also have the classic color selection of white and black. Since it is made of plastic materials, it will be offered in lower price. Essentially, there won’t be a large distinction between the capabilities of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. The only significant distinction are the materials and the price of these products. On the various color selection of the iPhone 5c, Apple claims the product aims for “the colorful” since they say that color expresses a feeling, makes statement, and so on. But the difference between the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c can be considered as a divider of social classes, regarding to the price differeces. The  blog stated that the color of the phone we choose can indicate the price we are willing to afford for the phone. However, the price for iPhone 5c won’t be  cheap. The 16GB phone will sell for US$ 99, with a two-year contract with the cellular provider. But the unlocked ones will be priced at US$ 549 for the 16GB and US$ 649 for the 32GB phones. According to , if the products enter Indonesia, the price will be so much more expensive. For the 16GB, the estimated price is IDR 10.5 million and for the 32GB ones is IDR 11.5 million. I think that there will be no "social class division" between the owners of iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, considering that the difference between the price of these two products are not so significant. Instead, I think Apple provides customers with more choices to purchase a product that represents themselves. Moreover, the capabilities of these two products are quite similar. These new iPhones have the potential of causing another boom in the smartphone market in Indonesia, since there are so many Apple enthusiasts in this country.

The Kinda Sutra: Misconception About Conception

Academy award winner director delivers a short comedic documentary composed of interviews with people telling us how they thought babies were made when they were kids – from humans being asexual creatures to being delivered by a white angle, this is an 8-minute video you do not want to miss! It’s entertaining, funny, and good at the same time. As a kid, the topic of baby conception is not a topic you speak freely to anyone. And any thoughts you have on the subject, usually when you want to ask someone if it is true, you get embarrassed. It is not spoken about as a child. But when you get older and learn the truth it becomes a humorous thing to talk about. One of the interviewees was even scared at one point of his life to do the number two because he didn’t want to flush down a baby when doing it. Just in case you still do not know how babies are made, skip the video to the end and hear the kids talk. They will explain it to you in the simplest and most innocent manner, like any 5 year old would, how babies are conceived step by step. Jessica worked on this together with illustrator to let the stories told by the interviewees be illustrated and animated. The title must have been taken from the ancient Indian sexual behavior script, the Kama Sutra – hence the Indian looking animation and room setup. Almost everyone has a funny story about how they thought babies were conceived. But the well-respected director of TV series such as Grey’s Anatomy, Jessica Yu, has successfully brought the long forgotten stories we kept to ourselves for many, many years.

Docomo Revealed Augmented Reality Headmounted Device

During the ongoing Ceatec electronics trade show in Tokyo, Docomo revealed their latest invention: the augmented reality headmounted device (HMD) that will be available for the visitors to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The HMD will be supported by character recognition technology, which will immediately translate foreign signs and texts into the wearer’s native language. The device recognises characters in Japanese, Chinese, English, and Korean. stated that this invention may be particularly useful for the foreign tourists who visit the most popular destinations in Japan, where translated menus are quite hard to find. The HMD is also provided by an application that enables the wearer to turn any flat surfaces into a touch screen when they wear a finger ring, it will show icons that is only visible to the wearer. It will also supported by a facial recognition software to help the wearer identify the name and job title of the people they meet. According to the reviews, this Docomo HMD is a potential competitor to the previously released Google Glass. According to The Telegraph, there was a study in June which show that 20 percent of 4,000 respondents think that the glasses should be banned completely due to privacy concerns. I think some features that offered on this augmented HMD will be very useful in the future. The translation feature, for example will be helpful for those who like to travel to foreign places, it will help them to understand the native language of the place they visit and will minimize the chance of misunderstanding the texts. But I think the facial recognition feature may be a bit disturbing for some people, since not everyone likes to have their identities acquired easily by random people. It also could be misused by irresponsible people to threaten another people. However, it’s us who determine whether this invention will be helpful or not. It depends on how we use it and our awareness of the risks and consequences of using any kind of technology but I’m quite sure that the development of the augmented reality HMD will be highly anticipated.

“Took Them Away” by Dear Reader

Dear Reader is an alternative/pop band from Johannesburg, South Africa. The band was founded back in 2006 by singer-songwriter Cherilyn MacNeil and Darryl Torr, a producer/bass player. They have released four studio albums; the first one called The Younger (2006), Replace Why with Funny (2009), Idealistic Animals (2011), and the latest one is Rivonia which was released earlier this year. The first single of Rivonia is "Took Them Away.” The song has a powerful narrative-descriptive lyrics, along with a hint of suspense that could bring the listeners into the story that the band tries to deliver. It is also combined with African music elements that can be heard in the beat and the background choir. The video for Took Them Away recently got featured on Vimeo Staff Picks. It was directed by Rob Savage, a young award-winning writer/director based in the UK. The video perfectly animates the lyrics of the song. It potrays a girl who is invited to play at her friend’s family farm. In the barn, she saw a Caucasian girl (her friend’s sister) hanging out with an African boy (the servant of her friend’s family). At night, she told her father what she saw earlier that day. Later she found out that her friend’s family forcibly separated their daughter and the servant and she is haunted by her guilt because she told her father. With such a beautiful lighting and dramatic editing, the video of Took Them Away leaves an emotionally intense sensation for its watchers. Even more, the video has been nominated for the Best Music Video at the Smalls Film Festival and featured on Adam Buxton’s BUG 39 show at the BFI Southbank. To throw an impressive party during the grand launch of a hotel is no small feat. Yet, , accomplished it with aplomb. Given the amount of limited space that Kosenda Hotel is built on, it’s hard not to hold back your awe once you step into it. Perhaps that was the point, to demonstrate the hotel’s incredible feat of spatial management, even though the latter is not the only highlight of the lodging. The contemporary design of the restaurant that marries the old and new aesthetic also provides plenty of conversation starters for the guests.
