Listen to Kelis New Track “Jerk Ribs”

To be perfectly honest, other than her radio hits (and the super-catchy "Baby I got your money" chorus on an ODB track) I am not too familiar with Kelis' discography. When I heard that she has a new album coming produced by TV On the Radio's Dave Sitek I started paying attention, and a preview of what's to come has been released in the form of a new single, "Jerk Ribs". The song features a tight production by Sitek, with a percussion and horn section that particularly stands out. Kelis' singing here very much reminds me of an 80s Michael Jackson without the James Brown-esque shouts - a subdued, smooth, but no less attention-grabbing performance. Needless to say, I dig it. The album will be released via Dave Sitek's label, Federal Prism. Listen to the track and download it below:

Embracing the Arts with Shunsuke Izumimoto

As one of the owners of Cafe Mondo in Kemang, Shunsuke Izumi's mission of creating a hub for local and international artists to share their work has not gone unnoticed. His genuine enthusiasm for the arts is infectious and translates into Cafe Mondo's diverse lineup of events. We visited the Japanese expatriate in his Kemang residence and talked to him about his background, the arts, and his view of Indonesia's current music scene.

Negative Lovers – .38 Loves Me/Flooded Eye

Negative Lovers (formerly Denial) is a band quickly, if not already, getting attention of many independent music fans here in Indonesia. With a record that has been in the works for years now, it's great to finally see an official release from the group. What we have above is a music video featuring their song,  Flooded Eye, which is released digitally via Picture in My Ear Records Bandcamp and (according to the description) and as a b-side to .38 Loves me. The music feels a lot less abrasive on record than their high-frequency drenched live performances. With the low-ends & melodies becoming more apparent, the details of their compositions that are often submerged under the wave of noise are now visible, revealing rather elaborate arrangements. A treat to the ear (and for the colorful video a treat to the eyes), be sure to give the group a listen and purchase their music via the link below.

Sore Releases Sorealist

I missed Record Store Day because I had a performance (which was an awesome experience, thank you JFCC), and though it sort of bummed me out because I really wanted to know what sort of special releases were available, particularly at Aksara, I got some really great news via SRM Management's email: Well, sort of. Sorealist, as they call it, is a compilation album featuring some of the group's best material plus some singles that were only available in soundtracks and such. Now the real treat comes in three brand new songs titled really puts Sore's ability to bring that romantic Indonesian nostalgia sound on the forefront with it being a ballad (and the chorus in the background really-really brings an emotional edge to it), retains that nostalgic vibe and an even more dramatic effect with the horn section weaving through it. Finally is the catchiest of the three, with the word "Gila" being repeated over and over giving the song a dizzying effect. Great to see Sore back, and listening to the new songs I'm getting very curious as to what musical direction the group has in store for us. You can purchase the album by clicking the link below, and be on the look out for a physical release!
