Tahun 2017 adalah tahun yang absurd. Toleransi kita dibuat acak-adut, dan seolah itu belum cukup politik luar negeri juga sedang karut-marut. Untungnya, ini adalah tahun yang baik untuk musik, jadi setidaknya, kita masih memiliki tempat bersandar yang bisa diandalkan. Berikut adalah beberapa di antaranya yang mampu menjadi teman terbaik menurut tim Whiteboard journal.

FEBRINA ANINDITA

Die Orangen – One Day in Brunswick
When I discovered this song, the first impression was exotic party in a warehouse. It’s sweaty and the beat just amped to a point where you say “holy shit.”

Big Thief – Pretty Things
Romantic. On the second thought, it’s weird.

Moses Sumney – Don’t Bother Calling
Not every singer can do perfect falsetto but he’s fineeee. Although all songs in the album “Aromanticism” sound much alike, one of it deserves a spot on your playlist.

MARIATI GALATIO

Ariel Pink – Another Weekend
There are a few favorite songs in this album ‘Dedicated To Bobby Jameson’ but this one hits the spot with longing-slash-daydreaming melodies.

Perfume Genius, Weyes Blood – Sides
The genius of Mike Hadreas can stretch for miles. The serene voice of Natalie Mering can mesmerize any soul. Together, it’s a 80s distorted, lush pop reverie.

Zeke Khaseli, Yudhi Arfani ft. Cholil Mahmud – Lazuardi
Can’t stop listening to the twang of spaghetti-western guitar along with Cholil’s haunting vocal. The song really describes the mood and sceneries of the film even before watching it.

AMELIA VINDY

WALL – Weekend
Post punk tidak pernah gagal dalam memberikan vibe menggebu-gebu, lewat dentuman drum dan bass yang mendominasi, track ini sangat tepat dimainkan ketika menghitung hari menuju akhir pekan.

Chastity Belt – Different Now
Walaupun klise, track ini menceritakan kegelisahan yang rasanya – mungkin – hampir dirasakan oleh banyak orang dan biasanya track seperti itu akan lebih mudah menempel sehingga sering di repeat one. Selain itu, melodi gitar dan synth yang terdengar dramatis menambahkan efek “nyes” di lagu ini, lol.

Girlpool – 123
I just love them from the beginning, plus tahun ini mereka memberikan gebrakan lewat album barunya yang lebih serius dan matang. Track 123 saya pilih karena track ini adalah suguhan pertama mereka, sebelum akhirnya merilis album terbarunya di tahun ini.

MUHAMMAD HILMI

Gnarwhal – Marathon Ripper
Mungkin seperti inilah terjemah segala absurditas di tahun 2017 dalam bahasa post-hardcore: berisik, mentah dan kacau.

Citizen – Jet
Sejak kurang lebih lima tahun kemarin, selalu ada album bagus yang lahir dari tangan Steve Albini-nya generasi millenials, Will Yip. Tahun ini, hal bagus itu hidup di album ketiga Citizen.

Lomelda – Out There
Tak ada yang lebih menenangkan dari keresahan yang dinyanyikan sepenuh hati, dan untuk itu track ini adalah lagu kebangsaannya.

Gun Outfit – Landscape Painter
I love Gun Outfit and what I describe as their “pastoral indie rock” stylings (is there such a thing?).

Boogarins – Onda Negra
I love Boogarins’ ability to combine beautiful melodies and harmonies and combine it with a good psych twist. Although most apparent in their live mid-song jams, you can get a taste of it in Onda Negra production.

Amber Coffman – No Coffee
Just a straight up feel-good song from a unique voice.

JANUAR KRISTIANTO

Ariel Pink – Acting (feat Dåm Funk)
The whole record sounds like a murky yet forgotten commercial break song that has no climax but floating endlessly over the horizon and that’s what makes it interesting. And this one track right here is definitely a killer.

Parquet Courts – Captive of the Sun (feat Bun B)
Is this fucking genius or what, two absolute legends get together to make one of the best singles coming out this year. Stay trill yall.

Limp Wrist – Don’t Want You
The world’s greatest queer punk band is back with a slap in the ass! This anthem is a statement of challenging the status quo and conservative minds in terms of upholding the presence of LGBT community.

RATTA BILL

Girlpool – Powerplant
This single marks a huge leap Girlpool has taken through its catchy, effortless move.

Alex G – Sportstar
Through all the sporty metaphors, this song somehow has its own sensual appeals that sits between the odds and cools.

Real Estate – Darling
All the instruments, they all dance and get the spotlight!
