The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro

Description:

After reading “The Buried Giant”, I proceeded to read what many have described as the essential Kazuo Ishiguro – one that won him the Booker Prize in 1989.

“The Remains of the Day” tells the story of a butler taking a rare and well-deserved personal leave and recalling his career at a prestigious household. The things he experiences can vary from the dramatic, such as serving British statesman as they discuss the future of a nation, to the mundane like arguing about the ins and outs of being a great butler.

What are at stake when one dedicates himself to the perfection of his craft? “The Remains of the Day” examines the consequences that comes with a lifetime of personal choices, one that I feel like I can relate to, even though I am far removed from the world these characters come from.

It is a beautiful read, and I really recommend you to take a look.

Google Stadia

Description:

Yang paling menyebalkan dari main game adalah keperluan untuk upgrade konsol/hardware secara berkala. Padahal harga game juga nggak semakin murah. Huft.

Untuk itu, saat beberapa waktu lalu Google mengumumkan Stadia, ini terasa seperti oase di belantara game yang semakin menggersangkan dompet para pemain. Stadia menawarkan game experience tanpa harus ada konsol yang juga memungkinkan kita untuk bermain secara mobile, baik melalui TV, Laptop, hingga smartphone. Sebuah konsep yang sepertinya bisa membuat konsol obsolete di masa depan. Bukankah harusnya begitu sejak dari dulu?

Beberapa mungkin akan meragukan realisasi konsep ini. Dengan masalah koneksi internet, pembagian server yang nggak masuk akal, nge-lag, dan lain-lain. Tapi bukankah semua temuan terdengar utopis di awalan?

“Me the Terrible”

Description:

Baru buka lagi akun Mubi setelah sekian tahun dan ternyata mereka ada app di Apple Store yang konsepnya mereka kurasi film yang diputar selama beberapa hari untuk user tonton. Pas gue buka ada 1 film pendek judulnya “Me the Terrible”. Lucu treatment dan musiknya walau jalan ceritanya agak absurd, tapi boleh lah buat ditonton sebelum tidur.

Kalau bosen Netflix atau Viddsee, lo bisa nonton film-film arthouse pilihan dari seluruh dunia di Mubi. Lumayan dapat referensi juga.

“If I Could Talk I’d Tell You – The Lemonheads”

Description:

Kemarin ga sengaja nonton video salah satu set The Lemonheads paling absurd, yaitu pas mereka lagi main di The Jenny Jones Show di awal tahun 90an. Dimulai dari Evan Dando and friends yang obviously terlihat sangat out of place, sampai audience (incld. Jenny Jones herself) yang terlihat berusaha keras untuk menikmati musiknya, membuat video ini menjadi hiburan yang cukup menyenangkan, sampai gue ulang berkali-kali.

Tapi karena itu, lead single mereka pada masa itu, “If I Could Talk I’d Tell You” jadi nempel sekali di otak gue. Not complaining tho, the song itself is still very much enjoyable.

Description:

An engrossing, fun autobiographical graphic novel of the Malaysian artist’s youth. Given to me early this year by the cartoonist’s family, I only got a chance to read it over the weekend. I especially love his drawings of old Malaysian kampung and town lifestyle that really capture the nostalgic feel.
