Words by Whiteboard Journal
It’s the Oscars!

What:
Yuni (2021)
Description:

What:
Luca (2021)
Description:
Like just churning out animations after animations yang mirip mirip aja. I think this is good and bad at the same time. Good because of the representation, bad because it feels like using other culture just for money) Been feeling this way since Moana came out dan next” filmnya ga menarik buat gue, kayak gitu gitu aja :/
They chose a more stylized approach to things, and it feels refreshing! I felt like this one is better story and visual wise. + The dedication of the teams really showed on this one. I felt like the disney pixar teams are really having fun working on this one. So sad that this joyful piece lost to a cash cow project (DONT @ ME)

What:
Wes Anderson
Description:
Selalu sesuka itu sama Wes Anderson’s film style and aesthetics apalagi as a fashion student, his proportion rules and color schemes are just perfect. To a T.
So then, how come this man’s got like seven nominations thus far and flawless work of art movies from set, cinematography to direction but not a single Oscar win has gone down his brown vintage suit pocket?? To top it off this year, his newest movie “The French Dispatch” didn’t even make it into the list of nominees for any category 🙁
Dune and Don’t Look Up got nominations left and right is well, okay, but Timothée Chalamet’s got funkier hair here AND there’s Saoirse Ronan again so like??? some things are just not adding up for me :))

What:
Jim Eugene Carey
Description:
Tapi guys ternyata orang ini bukan cuman sekedar bisa bikin film komedi loh, kalo kalian pernah ngeliat “Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind” akting dia bagus banget dipasangin sama Kate Winslet.
Oscar? Maybe next time Jim, but you always make us remember the old times.

What:
C’mon C’mon (2021)
Description:
C’mon, Academy, no love for Joaquin Phoenix in Mike Mills’ ‘C’mon C’mon’?
In all seriousness, C’mon C’mon is another tender, honest & funny film from Mike Mills. Mike Mills delivers a heartwarming narrative on growing up, parenthood, and how it’s okay to admit you’re not okay sometimes. C’mon C’mon feels so distinct with it’s genuine dialogue, making you lose the concept of you watching this as a movie. Instead, you find yourself engulfed in a familial relationship as if it’s your very own.
Joaquin Phoenix plays a New York native (Johnny) who travels the U.S. interviewing children about their expectations for society in the future. The irony in that comes with the fact that he has no outside experience with children, having none of his own.
There are so many ways this could have easily ended up as just another formulaic family centric affair. But it’s just so heartfelt that in almost every scene it’s trying to make sense of the happy, sad, shifting life we all live in. There are no great epiphanies at the end of the road within, just a lot of quiet conversations, some friendly and some rather fulfilled, between an uncle and nephew as they try to figure out their place in the world. That, for me, is what makes C’mon C’mon as pleasurable as it is. Its calm, melodic tone works extremely well, developing the Uncle and Nephew’s relationship and showing you just how much both were impacted by their time together. To me, this movie felt like a two-hour long warm hug.
