Pada “Things We Like” kali ini, kami meng-highlight ragam aktivitas favorit semasa berdiam di rumah. Dengan Halloween yang akan jatuh di minggu ini, kami mengumpulkan berbagai film horor favorit. Dari film pendek, found-footage, hingga yang terkini, berikut adalah beberapa pilihan kami.

Gue bukan penakut, terutama untuk hal-hal mistis, karena masih banyak hal-hal lain yang lebih ngeri di kehidupan nyata: telat bayar cicilan rumah, mengecewakan keluarga, proyek tidak jalan, dst. Makanya gue jarang takut kalo nonton film horor lokal maupun internasional. Paling salah satu film yang membekas ngerinya adalah scene di “Hereditary” yang si kakak antar adiknya pulang dari pesta karena sesak napas, selain itu, jarang ngerasa takut. Kecuali mungkin pas nonton film ini. Ngerinya berasa dekat dan mengikat. Selain mengangkat elemen tradisi dengan cukup baik, film ini juga menyelipkan pesan tentang kelestarian lingkungan, suatu hal yang juga memang ada dalam ajaran-ajaran tradisi Jawa kuno. Joko Anwar dan Mo Brothers masih harus belajar banyak dari film ini untuk membuat film horor lokal yang tak hanya ngeri, tapi juga punya substansi. Tapi tahu nggak kenapa film ini berasa paling ngeri di antara film-film yang lain? Karena gue pernah ada di situasi yang agak mirip dengan situasi di film ini. Hihihi.

Pulse
Description:
Compared to other horror movies on this list, “Pulse” might not be the scariest per se. It doesn’t contain any jump scares and is quite a slow burner to say the least. Premise-wise it might sound like a bad-written comedy since it’s a story about ghosts invading the real world via the internet. But mind you, it was released back in 2001 and the Internet wasn’t as big as it is now. Either way, it has a lot of long takes which fills it with dread and a major creepy atmosphere. It touches upon topics about loneliness in the age of the internet, isolation, depression, existentialism, and basically everything we’re all dealing with in 2020.
Since 2020 in itself is a horror show for most of us, “Pulse” managed to give us a bleak overview of the world we’re living now, 19 years ago.

El Orfanato (2007)
Description:
Imagine you and your fam just moved into this great big gothic style house, about to live your rich madame fantasy life, but you keep hearing knocking in the walls and then your kid goes missing. Males. Granted it isn’t the scariest film out there but it was my first one, so this takes the cake for me. This film made me like more emotionally charged horror films. + it’s produced by Guillermo del Toro! so, woohoo.
Look at that fucking kid… I love you Tomas, but what the hell?

Gue orangnya kagetan BANGET dan juga sangat penakut jadi ga gitu suka nonton film horor. But I think ‘Us’ would be my fav horror movie. Sooo many jumpscare scenes, jantung gue rada sakit setelah nonton ini.

Grave Torture (Siksa Kubur) (2012)
Description:
Gue lumayan berani kalo soal hal-hal mistis, tapi film pendek karyanya Joko Anwar ini serem banget sih. Mungkin karena premisnya mudah diterima dan masuk akal banget, jadi antara serem liat scene-nya, sama serem bayangin “bener bakal kayak gitu ga ya?”. Gue udah 2-3x nonton ini, dan pasti sehabis itu langsung kebawa ke mimpi beberapa hari.
Also, honorable mention untuk film Pocong 2. Gue tadinya mau masukin itu, tapi pas search filmnya di Google langsung mau nangis liat posternya, hehe. To be completely honest, ceritanya jelek, tapi serem-nya dapet banget. Film ini pun berhasil bikin gue ga pernah mau tidur pake guling lagi, to this day.

A quiet horror/mystery that started out one way and ended another. Combining classic whodunit with suspenseful demonic possession, this film grips from the beginning to the ending. It’s like listening to an extended Acid Mothers Temple ‘Flying Tea Pot’.
