Just Things’ Guide to the 2020 Office Life
It has been a few weeks into the new decade, and hopefully we are still welcoming it with open arms. While we have been told to brace for the big 2020, we definitely were not prepared for what’s to come or what had happened the past few days. But, worry not, it’s time to face the new decade with a new attitude!
As some opinion articles has mentioned, we’re experiencing the rise of the multi-hyphenates. Move over side hustle, it’s time to take back the power by becoming what used to be called the “Triple Threat”. You’re never just an editor, you’re also a photographer/designer/dancer/and an artist on the side. And you’re probably interested in learning how to code since it’s dubbed as one of the Important Skills of the Future.
Good thing that you’ve still got ambition. The drive to propel you forward. But with this comes the downsides too. We’re becoming more accustomed to be working more hours than we’re supposed to, so might as well make the most of it by being comfortable. How? By making use of the simplest things around you since there are a lot of ways to see and use things to your benefit. In the second edition of just things, we’re going to show you how to explore the dull moments in the office.
1. An easy way for a 20 minute nap at work
It’s not a surprise that for most of us who are trapped in the corporate world, the nine to five is often just a concept. What were you thinking? To wake up, go in early and head home as soon as the clock hits 5 PM? Not that it’s impossible, but consider yourself lucky if you’re amongst those who could see the sunset on weekdays.
How much coffee do you need just to survive one working day? One is enough, but sometimes two is needed – especially when it’s sweater weather. But, what happens when caffeine’s out of the question? All you need is a 20-minute power nap and all will be fine. At least that’s what some articles are saying about the wonders of naps. Hence, it is best to make use of what you have. Find a spot to lay down, reshape your wind-proof skirt into a pillow, and go get that short nap you very much deserve.
2. To be ready on all occasions
It is often that you would have your whole day planned even before you arrive to the workplace. Especially on Fridays, your day would continue after work, where you’ll grab dinner, swing by your friend’s place for pre-drinks, and then see where the night takes you. In the case where home is too out of reach, a flexible attire is essential.
Going yoga after a board meeting? Attending an art exhibition opening party after a 6-hour brainstorm session? Invited to a cocktail soiree in a bougie lounge with the girls? Take off that blazer and get ready to get those compliments.
3. Be ready for yoga after work
Is your work causing physical pain? Do you slowly realise how bad your posture is? Another day at the office means more time to stay in one position while doing repetitive motions for hours. Meanwhile, research shows that repetitive motion and staying in the same position for a prolonged period can cause or worsen musculoskeletal disorders.
Don’t worry! Yoga helps. Aside from relieving stress, it reduces discomfort, builds up energy, and ultimately increases productivity. Remember to take frequent short breaks to stretch, while also practicing relaxation to clear your mind. Deep breaths.
4. To eat instant noodles between deadlines
Everyone benefits from some light snacking in the middle of the day. A little extra gorengan here and there can keep blood sugar levels stable, which eventually wards off distracting hunger and keeps your brain in focus. However, when gorengan doesn’t satisfy you, it’s not a bad idea to resort to one of the beloved carbs, noodles!
It’s savoury, tastes like home, and most importantly it keeps you full. The only downside, sometimes you can’t avoid the splatter from its soup. Especially when it’s so good, you’d definitely devour every bite with no hesitation. Who wants to ruin their only good white shirt with a tiny splatter from their food? Thank god for multi-functional aprons.
