We spoke with Marshella Jastine about the feelings of love and the element of a feast that comes with the Just Things at Footurama collection.

Look around you, how many items that you see would you consider your prized possessions? What do you feel when you interact with these items? Is it hope? Love? Grief? Or wonder? How do these feelings become ascribed to these items? Then ask yourself again, what if all these items can project their own feelings to us, as their ‘rightful’ owner?
These questions are the guiding principles that become the basis of the latest collection from Just Things. Inspired by the romantic ponders of everyday life and objects, it explores further the idea of being in your own company and being more in tune with your own feelings. Called “The Feeling of”, it presents a time to have an intimate moment with the only company that you will always have; yourself.
With this collection being a continuation of our column Just Things, we spoke with Marshella Jastine about the feelings of love and the element of a feast that comes with this collection.
What is the initial idea for this collection?
The initial ideas came very spontaneously. We saw all the figurines at Footurama and what came to mind immediately was what if all these things can objectify feelings to us or vice versa, because somehow from my experience in life, I can have a feeling or attachment toward a certain item or stuff that have memory or special meaning to me. Weirdly enough, sometimes I can feel that they want to say something to me. On the other hand, if I lose something maybe it’s not meant for me.
This collection features specific imagery of love and the element of a feast. What are you trying to put forward with this?
Nothing specific at first, but the idea of love and feast was the main inspiration when my team (MJ Office Team) and I were discussing what kind of installation we wanted to present. During that time, I was into the idea of dining alone yet also thinking a lot more about dining with someone else. Somehow, it resembles and represents all the items we picked from Footurama. Also, coming from my personal life journey, finding things or the one (lover, friends and even objects) always has an interesting process and backstory. So, if I can summarise it in a sentence, this is just an experience that derives from my personal experience and thoughts.
What kind of feeling are you trying to embody with this collection?
We hope that everybody could open their hearts while seeing this and have their own feelings and thoughts about this collection. We want them to interpret our collection by themselves, hence that’s why it’s called “The Feeling of”.
However, we do have explanations about each of the objects we chose and their function based on our thoughts. For example, the plates are called “The Feeling of Devouring” and the idea was seen from the plate’s point of view, asking questions like what if they can talk and explain how they feel or how they wanna be utilized? So, back to the original explanation, it is the feeling from the objects toward us and vice versa.
Any further interesting stories/trivia you’d like to share about this collection?
Not a specific one, just a sentimental feeling that I think my team and I have been through. Every object that we chose has its own story, just like us. Also, as for the puddin’ lamp, it’s called “puddin’” because calling someone as puddin’ means it is someone you love and a night lamp is an object that is intimate and accompanies your nighttime. We wanted to present something heartfelt and genuine because we made it from the heart based on our experiences and thoughts. Lastly, we wish everyone could enjoy this and they could find the one (our objects/a person) that they love/like 🌝.
