Anjung Salihara

Facilitating the Creative Process

by Dwiputri Pertiwi

The Salihara Community (Komunitas Salihara) is best known for their in-house programs that that is showcased in their facilities. After 1.5 years in the making, they recently celebrated the opening of Anjung Salihara.

The main function of this new building differs from that of the three existing buildings. Galeri Salihara and Teater Salihara were built to present and showcase, while the new five-story building is dedicated to develop and nurture talents. Anjung Salihara is a pavilion that provides studio facilities for regular practice sessions, guest rooms for performers, and even a rooftop amphitheater. Salihara’s archives have also been relocated to this new building due to the limited space of the basement previously used.

The very top floor of the building is a nice open space with benches around the wall, finished with a wooden stage at the opposite corner of the staircase entrance. On a nice day, you will be able to see Jakarta’s skyline from the amphitheater. This area was made to focus on shows played after sunset. Live acoustic shows, gatherings, and film screenings are the type of events you will get to enjoy at the amphitheater.

There are two main studios in Anjung, the dance studio and the music studio. The dance studio takes up two levels of the building to make room for the high ceilings needed to hang up the lights, and to have a viewing window from the mezzanine level. With mirrored walls and bars, the studio is perfect for both practices and performances.

Above the dance studio is the music studio. The studio is built for live unplugged recordings complete with a mixer room. The walls and ceiling panels are designed for great acoustics, and with jacks all over the room, the instrument setup’s possibilities are limitless.

Other than studios, Anjung Salihara is also equipped with a multi- purpose room. Located behind the music studio, the multi-purpose room can be used to host small-scale exhibitions or even group discussions.

The most notable section of the building would be the guest rooms. The two-story nine-bedroom wing is furnished with wood and metal interiors and a top-to-bottom window. Each room can accommodate up to two people. They can choose to stay in one of the following rooms: the common room or the VIP room. The main difference between both rooms would be the fact that the VIP room is more private, and it does not have glass doors. The people staying in the common rooms would have to use the communal bathroom, but guests of all rooms still share the same living room they can use to chat and dine at.

The reason why Salihara is unique is because they do not make any of the rooms or studio with no purpose. They have made each of their halls to suit their events. Anjung Salihara is a great example of that. The studios are for future programs they want to hold, and they want to have a place to let people learn and develop their skills, as well as to build a more creative community.
