Street photography is a trend that has flourished all over the world, and it is not without controversy. The photographers’ interest in street-level dynamics has actually existed since the invention of high-speed cameras. Their interests in what happens on the streets have created a wide spectrum of photographic approach, from the surrealist to the provocative. Such a spectrum has set street photography apart from photojournalism or documentary photography, in terms of tension and information.
What are the contributions, and ethical controversies, made by street photography in connection to the wealth of approaches in photography as a whole? This discussion is supplementary to Bertrand Meunier’s photo exhibition Hub Side Down at Galeri Salihara.
The discussion welcomes Erik Prasetya and Irma Chantily as speakers. Erik Prasetya is a photographer with 25 years of specialized experience in street photography. Invisible Photography Asia has chosen him as one of Asia’s 30 most influential photographers. He has published a book, Jakarta Estetika Banal (2011). Meanwhile, Irma Chantily is a critic and lecturer of Photography at Institut Kesenian Jakarta.
