Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma
Description:
Imagine if we could have a shokugeki to fight for things you really want to have/happen?
For some, this anime might seem oddly sexual for food anime, but I’m 100% down for it. It’s such a good show with a wide range of graceful yet mouth watering food selections. Sensual fried chicken? Pseudo Pork Roast? A5 Japanese Beef Roti Don? Boeuf Bourguignon? You name it. This show is an absolute BANGER.
I would also like to thank Netflix for having all episodes of this iconic anime in store.

Fruits Basket (2019)
Description:
Truth be told, I really-really wanted to put Kyou Kara Maoh, but honestly the 3rd season anime (as well as the ending of the manga) was quite disappointing, WOLFRAM DESERVED BETTER. But anyway, it’s a really dumb anime with lots of heartfelt and cheesy moments to forget the crippling anxieties of life. Kyo Kara Maoh is my most cherished childhood memory. (Came from the same director as Minky Momo, Ranma ½ and also Lol… Neo Yokio)
During my anime rediscovery journey, a friend told me that there’s a 2019 remake of my all time favorite manga, FRUITS BASKET. They’re going to animate the whole story this time, and I was very pleased to discover that the 2019 adaptation actually lived up to my expectation. This adaptation is more than just a slice of life shoujo / comedy, it explores childhood trauma and identity really well. What differs most from the 2001 anime though… is Shigure. Staying true to Shigure’s arc really solidified the storyline. He’s now my favorite character in the series. Is he good? Is he evil? Why is he lying?!? Whose side is he on?! Guess we’ll have to wait and see!

Ninja Scroll (1993)
Description:
In anime, violent is permissible & executed in a way that could only happen in this specific artform. There are limitations within the live-action movies that can be delivered through a violent spectacle of this format and hence why Ninja Scroll is so fun to watch from start to finish. As one of the world’s greatest adult-oriented anime, this title delivers a combo of fast-paced man-slaying, impeccable fight cinematography, metaphysical theme & all-around dope ass adventure. Buckle up and get your snacks ready!

Disclaimer: I’ve only read the manga version and have not seen the anime. It has been a good while since I discovered a pleasant, wholesome, all-ages manga that is entertaining but not sickeningly sweet. But I devoured this series over a weekend and I kinda teared up a bit NO IT’S NOT A SIGN OF WEAKNESS K!
The story is set in 15th century Florence, at the brink of the Renaissance. Arte is our titular spunky main character, a passionate artist-in-training born into a lower-class aristocrat family. When her family forbade her from pursuing her artistic interests, she left home and went into town, volunteering to be an apprentice to any artists that would take her. Lo and behold, the only workshop that would hire a female apprentice was the one-man-studio of a painter named Leo… not-nardo-da-Vinci.
If this were an Elex Media release, this would have been a Serial Cantik title (oh my childhood). It’s filled with girl-power moments, where the main character fights against the male-dominated profession with pure might and spirited speeches. But the story is also more nuanced than most shoujo manga, and it managed to mildly surprise me whenever I thought the story would be trapped in girl-tries-her-best-but-is-rescued-by-handsome-boy cliches. Also while I suspect this is 80% historically inaccurate, the tidbits about masters, artisans, and how they are essentially the commercial graphic designers of the 15th century, bound to the requests of their clients–sorry, PATRONS—are deeeeelightful.

Ao Haru Ride
Description:
Truth be told, nothing tops Honey & Clover for me (read my previous post on things to watch) but Ao Haru Ride could be a close second.
The anime i watch usually are in the realms of slice of life and romance as i really dislike heavily-thematic animes, like time travels, magic, sci-fi or whatever. A realistic portrayal of a blooming high-school romance just does it for me and Ao Haru Ride ticks all the boxes.
The girl’s cute, the guy’s cute, and the story is slow-paced but heart-fluttering. Zara approved!

Mob Psycho 100
Description:
Exploring the ugly and beautiful side of human being 101. Terrific anime, I really like how ONE (the author’s name) writes story, it doesn’t follow the usual shounen anime/manga story tropes. It’s packed with comedy and the greatest aspect of this anime is how it teaches us to be a better human by exploring our emotions.
