By adapting Kapai-kapai into the Javanese language, Kalanari Theatre Movement tries to draw Arifin C. Noer’s masterpiece closer to the daily life of Javanese society. They are not entirely faithful to the original stage play, but have embarked on a variety of interpretations and improvisations, thus allowing Kapai-kapai (atawa Gayuh) to be presented in an open-air space, reminiscent of how traditional theater is presented across the Archipelago.
