Weta Digital‘s excellence was recognized through its groundbreaking movie The Lord of the Rings especially for its digital character work on Gollum. Based in Wellington, New Zealand Weta Digital was put to form by Peter Jackson, Richard Taylor and Jamie Selkirk in 1993 to produce the digital special effects for Heavenly Creatures. As you have seen on the above logo, Weta Digital is named after the weta, some of the largest insects in the world, prevalent in New Zealand, ironically the insects that Peter Jackson are terrified with.
Weta Digital has won several Academy Awards and BAFTAs, including this years 82nd Academy Award for the most digitally enhanced movie ‘Avatar‘ and impressively a few of its production made it to the list of nominees of this years Academy awards, such as ‘District 9‘ and ‘Star Trek‘. An impressive achievement that gave itself an alignment with the widely known visual-effects master Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). For your information ILM belongs to Goerge Lucas and his motion picture visual effects company has made a record of achieving 16 Awards as Best Visual Effects Oscars with 23 additional nominations. An astounding record in which I believe Weta Digital may catch up with in the long run.
