The Academy Awards or widely known as the Oscars has always been the annual event anticipated by everyone involved in the film industry. Technically, its an event to recognize the excellence of the professionals in the film industry. But more so, it has become an event full of dramatic long speeches and a parameter for the fashion police to to judge who wore the best or worst attire. The first awards were presented on May 16, 1929, at a private brunch at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel with an audience of about 270 people, during the first year awards were normally broadcasted by radio then by TV. To add the element of suprise, since 1941, the Academy used sealed envelopes to reveal the names of the winner during the show. The awards has then been broadcasted at the famous Kodak theatre since the year 2002. The symbolic feature of the Oscars is the golden-plated statue which actually depicts a knight holding a crusader’s sword standing on a reel of film with five spokes. The five spokes each represent the original branches of the Academy: Actors, Writers, Directors, Producers, and Technicians.

If you visit the oscars website, there’s approximately 30 plus more hours until the 82nd Academy Awards will be aired, and we have seen the Academy taking a milestone in including such a variation in the nomination of best pictures, particularly in including the only animated movie ‘Up‘ in the selection. Although I personally have no problem with that animation, but it’s just a bit odd to compare the movies as ‘Up‘ to ‘The Hurt Locker‘ or even ‘Avatar‘. You question a bit on what their basis of judgement would be on. We’ve heard so far that the latter movie, ‘Avatar‘ which ultimately is most expensive movie by far has created such a big stir that there is mighty possibility that James Cameron’s piece might win another Oscar. Although, I hear an objection from someone in Whiteboard team who has high hopes for the film ‘The Hurt Locker‘. Recently, we found out that the producer of ‘The Hurt Locker’ has been banned from attending the Academy Awards after a lawsuit was made accusing the filmmakers of cheating an Iraq war veteran out of the financial participation in the film (Read more, here). We never really know what can ever happen on that Oscars stage now, I can only say that may the best film/director/actor/actress/writer/and so on, win.
