Since their debut store in Japan in 1983, MUJI is not only an internationally renowned company, but for many people is a way of life. Muji’s design culture is centered on designing “simple” products that are basic and functional. Without any tagline or slogan, the concept of simple, functional and affordable is already planted in consumer mind when they enter one of Muji outlets or just by seeing the label tag. The MUJI philosophy has won them a worldwide following over the last 20 years, emphasizing earth-friendliness, the use of innovative materials, and efficient packaging for reduced cost. Muji is Japan’s definitive answer to IKEA.

In my opinion, Muji’s products have never been overly accessorized, yet it has the same appeal as any designer’s products. Muji successfully maintain their brand image without targeting specific map of consumer. That is one of the reason Muji is very accessible to all type of consumer, men, women, housewife, blue collar, white collar and even fickle youth. Muji does not relate the brand into a certain trend, category or individuality, nor does it expose its price as a weapon of mass appeal.

In 2001, Kenya Hara, an internationally recognized graphic designer and author of the widely acclaimed book, “Designing Design” took over the seat of creative director. Since his inauguration as the brain of Muji’s creative development, he has been credited as the key figure in further developing the company. His most notable work is shaping the brand identity and philosophy.

We do not create products that lure customer into believing that this is the best or I must have this. We would like our customer to feel the rational sense of satisfaction that comes not with this is the best, but with this is enough. Best becomes enough”.

The above paragraph statement of philosophy in my opinion is truly one of Kenya Hara’s best works for Muji. It really defined what Muji is all about.
