Edward Hutabarat is known as one of Indonesian’s prominent fashion designer that places high value in Indonesia’s renowned ‘Batik’. Together with Boedi Basoeki and Gochin Suryaatmadja, he introduced a book titled ‘The Backstage, Part One’ that tells about backstage life of the creative industry in Indonesia. In the movement of modernization, he tries to ensure that Indonesia’s cultural heritage is still in position hoping it does not face extinction. He reveals a notion that the intellectual group, those who have high access to global reference should play an important role in giving guidelines to the way of life of the artisan in remote areas. Providing them with substantial knowledge and concepts so that their cultural artwork and heritage can be introduced to the international stage, it’s not enough to empathize by giving a sum of material donation but one must be presently active in preserving Indonesia’s traditional heritage. The book also features an artistic photography capturing the life behind the creative industry in Indonesia.
