I am against the media in creating charitable reality shows with the main plot to help those underprivileged ones. Even though its for a good cause, to me its deemed to be seen as too show-off for the one who gives a lump sum of money, and creates a very apparent power gap between the haves and the have-nots. In no way do I think it helps the poor in their struggle of survival, but creates more of a reliance of the poor to the middle class or the rich class.
Realizing that I’m not the only one with this point of view, an artist from Africa and Europe, created a television network titled Slum TV, which is about the slum culture and was produced by its inhabitants as well. Within 4 years, it has managed to create job opportunities for 16 to 20 people in Kenya. These programs do not just overexpose the hardship of the living conditions of people in Kenya, but are equally rooted in producing dramas and documentaries. At least we know there are programs out there aligned in achieving progress for the 2015-millennium development goals.
