The event, which will be on Tuesday May 22nd, is their seventh in the series and features a slew of bands that begs your attention. A Rock Gun, Tristan, The Triangle, Innocenti, and Sigmun (whose sampler cd received a very favourable review from jan k) will flex their musical muscle for you and yours this time. The event is free and takes place in Hardrock Cafe Jakarta (in Plaza Indonesia), and it begins at 9 PM so there is plenty of time for you to make your way to the event, and make your way to the event you will!

From 3rd – 17 th June, 2012, Goethe-Institut Indonesia, in collaboration with the German Embassy and Galeri Nasional Indonesia, present a landmark exhibition in Jakarta: “Raden Saleh and the Beginning of Modern Indonesian Painting”.

In the year of Raden Saleh’s 200 th birthday, this will be the first-ever monographic show of the painter’s works in his homeland, bringing together 40 paintings and drawings from private and public collections. The exhibition is the first effort in uniting Raden Saleh’s work in a comprehensive exhibition and making the paintings of this “father of Javanese modernity” accessible. The exhibition’s curator is art historian and Raden Saleh biographer Dr. Werner Kraus.

Raden Saleh was the first Asian painter with European education and experience. However, his deep roots in Javanese culture remain visible in all his works. His influence is rightfully seen as the starting point of a new visual system in Indonesian painting. Raden Saleh’s contribution to the modernisation of Javanese culture and thinking has hardly been explored and shall gain new momentum with this first exhibition of his life and work.

The exhibition is supported by BMW and is Part of JERIN – Jerman dan Indonesia.

Renowned Cook, Jamie Oliver first initiated what he calls the Food Revolution to fight against the appalling state of obesity in American society, he started by reforming the school lunch programs and promoting eatings habits to live longer lives. With this premise of a health campaign, the food revolution was expected to reach a global understanding on how one  should achieve a healthier relationship with their food.

This May 19, the first ever Food Revolution Day will be launched by the Jamie Oliver Foundation. As part of the global campaign, Omar Niode Foundation in collaboration with Honocoro Community will be hosting the Food Revolution Day Java, a community event sharing the same objectives.
 Food Revolution Day will involve participants all over the world hosting and joining in events to highlight the incredible benefits of better food.

Themed “healthy traditional foods,” Food Revolution Day Java invites school children and their parents for a day of food edutainment, cooking show, jamu ice cream workshop and tumpeng decoration, all based on traditional foods.

This year’s World Architecture Festival will be held on October 3-5, in Asians new design hub, Singapore, a new location from where it is held in the previous years, Barcelona. On it’s fifth year, the festival will include presentations, exhibitions, and seminars by a line-up of international architects. This prestigious annual event is a meeting point for architects, designers, and clients, as well as an award ceremony that includes 30 categories such as buildings, landscapes, future projects, and even interior.

The winner of each category will receive recognition from around the world; last year’s Best Building Winner, Media-ICT, has received invitation to collaborations from Kuwait, Russia, and Turkey after the news of the award was published widely in the press. On May 31st Potato Head  will host a  art performance and installation named, Birdprayers, by two artist, Sara Nuytemans (Belgium/Indonesia) and Arya Pandjalu (Indonesia). Birdprayers will showcase twelve performers wearing twelve custom – made masks that represent identities across the globe, with music complimented by Indonesia’s renowned virtuoso, Dipha Barus.

These masks are models of buildings referring to bird houses which are often found within the kampong of Java. As with tradition, many locals would replace the simple forms of bird cages typically made of wood and other materials to show their creativity, thus producing distinctive houses for their birds. In past exhibitions, Sara and Arya had created bird houses resembling the forms of four different holy buildings performed in many cities around the world. From these performances, contradiction of ideas in uniformity and differences were staged to raise questions about our relationship towards religions and their sacred worship.

Aftermath: Indonesia in the Midst of Catastrophes is a solo photography exhibition and an audio-visual presentation showcasing the renowned work of photojournalist Kemal Jufri – known especially for receiving multiple awards, with the most prestige award received in the Press Photo 2011.

This exhibition highlights the story of human triumph in defeating the point of despair and the efforts in abolishing the grief of humanity in facing disaster, both by nature or mankind.

Aftermath: Indonesia in the Midst of Catastrophes is also a social response to the disaster management and its preparation, which also serves as a valuable lesson to anticipate and face future phenomenons in the future.

A selected number of poems by freelance writer DINA PURITA ANTONIO-JUFRI will also be read by Acehnese poet DEBRA H. YATIM during the opening. The audio visual presentation will be showcased at Teater Salihara, a blackbox theater with a maximum seating capacity of 252, the only one of its kind in the country.

Calling all New Yorkers, New York City Popfest returns for its 5th run and it is looking better than ever. Taking place in 5 venues including Cake Shop and Knitting Factory, 2012′s Popfest is taking place 4 days starting the 17th (that is this weekend). Bands that are playing includes the likes of Lisa Bouvier from Sweden, Finland’s Burning Hearts, and Comet Gain from the UK. This is something we personally have been waiting for and its glorious day has finally arrived! White Shoes and the Couples Company second full-length, Album Vakansi, is now available in beautiful vinyl format thanks to the folks at Minty Fresh Records. We have yet to lay our hands on this gem of Indonesian pop (and we will soon!), and I’m sure some of you are very excited to get your own copy as well. Well if you are in the Jakarta area you are in luck because WSATCC is celebrating the arrival of the LP by having a record release party tomorrow, friday the 11th! Apparently it will be at DeMajors, and according to our sources supply of Album Vakansi is very limited so get yours fast (don’t forget to leave a copy for us, though!).

Art and Design students FSRD ITB will be holding an exhibition with the theme “The Wicked ARTIST AND THE INNOCENT THIEF: Prologue”, on 7-13 May 2012 located at Gedung Indonesia Menggugat, Jalan Perintis Kemerdekaan No. 5 Bandung

“THE ARTIST AND THE INNOCENT Wicked THIEF: Prologue” is an exhibition that raises the intersection of art with the public morality. TheIntersection results in a particular social phenomenon that deserves to be discussed. In this exhibition, they present the data in the form of the initial sketches and documentation of works of art that invites controversy in the community as a result of the intersection with the professed morality. Including examples of the work of Agus Suwage and Davy Linggar titled “Pink Swing Park” which was then better known in the community as a ‘case Anjasmara pornographic images’.
