When I recently read that MTV has redesigned their logo, it made me wonder to how much of an impact it would actually make. They opted to only slightly refresh the original design because of its iconic nature and existing branding. The new design is essentially a cropped version of the original one, leaving out the tag line ‘music television’.
I doubt there still is a large percentage of the people who watch MTV, The closest time I got to watching MTV is when I was going through the TV channel in search of anything appealing. I only did stop on MTV when I accidentally saw the ‘Foo fighters – the best of you’ video, it was showing with subtitles of the lyrics for surprisingly, karaoke. Fortunately, I was quick enough to change the channel when I noticed that my mom started randomly singing along.
So, with the current Internet hype and transition of pop culture from television to anything mobile, it’s hard to see if this re-branding scheme would prove to be successful. The younger generations has moved on to a different source of music as the likes of MySpace and iTunes.
MTV itself has been an iconic brand with a history of 30 years, if they drop ‘Music television’, what’s left would no other be a non-differentiated channel with a new-segmented target to approach.
According to the press release:
It represents a new visually defined MTV, stimulating its past, present and future and embracing it’s diversity. Everything from Jersey Shore, to the VMAs to collaborations with the MoMA. The logo is part of MTV’s re-invention to connect with today’s millennial generation and bring them in as part of the channel.
