The PTT family proudly presents Potato Head Garage, the newest member of the family that already consists of the Potato Head restaurant in Jakarta and the popular Potato Head Beach Club in Bali.

Located in SCBD’s Fairgrounds complex, Potato Head Garage uses the space of what was previously an old abandoned stadium. Because of its previous function, the place goes perfectly well with the dozen or so chandeliers that hang from more than a dozen chandeliers from different eras — from the 1920s to the 1980s — hang beautifully from the high ceilings. The restaurant normally accommodates 270 customers, but it is also possible to host standing parties for 700 people; making it an ideal venue for formal gatherings.

The real treat, however, is obviously the food and drinks available at Potato Head Garage. Chef Hikaru Take is originally from Osaka, but his culinary training mostly revolved around French cuisine. The combination of his native cultural background and professional training brings a fresh touch to the dishes he prepares — particularly the steak dishes. Not only are the cooking techniques unique, but the range of premium beef used enhance the quality of the establishment’s steak. For refreshments, Potato Head Garage bar offers an extensive type of mojitos, which is one of the most popular drinks in the world. Mixologist Dre Masso who relocated from London to Jakarta shows his talent by putting together his own mojito mixes, giving the restaurant more points of originality.

Despite the elegant industrial character of the restaurant, the place resonates a relaxed and natural vibe. Such a balance can be achieved because there is a total 210 types of plants sitting in pretty pots all around the premises. The greeneries are what make the restaurant’s environment very enjoyable and not intimidating towards customers. It is this element that distinguishes Potato Head Garage from other restaurants offering top-notch meals. While the restaurant’s menu is indeed special, Potato Head Garage does not aim to build an exclusive “fine-dining” image for itself. The main goal is to run a steak house that preserves classic flavours while adapting it to modern elements.

As of May 22, 2013, Potato Head Garage will also be open for lunch.

When I played Tam Tam Buku on my laptop, my dear coworkers Athina Ibrahim and Chandra Drews immediately turned their heads and asked “who is this?”. To their surprise, and a pleasant surprise it indeed is, it was White Shoes and the Couples Company. The group is about to release their newest record “White Shoes & The Couples Company Menyanyikan Lagu2 Daerah”, a 5 song mini-album that have them reworking Indonesian folk songs into the group’s brand of pop music. Tam Tam Buku resonate a very vintage sounds, nailing the production with a noticeable reverb on the instruments and vocals. The back and forth vocals of the guys and gals of the group is super catchy, and the delay-filled lead guitar and drums really stands out. This is a must listen, so click the Soundcloud embed below and enjoy!

This awesome 14th edition mix of Hip Hop History (this one focuses on the year 1992) from the good chaps at Brooklyn Radio is not to be slept on.

“After a tour of the 80s, the crew digs into the genre as it becomes a pop culture phenomenom in the 90s. Starting with the jazzy samples of the Native Tongues movement in the early part of the decade, with groups like A Tribe Called Quest and the Jungle Brothers, the series moves into the gangster pop of the East Coast/West Coast rivalry. Theres plenty of Biggie, Tupac, Dre, Snoop, Wu-Tang, Jay-Z, club classics, forgotten singles, the start of the indie era with Rawkus, and flavors from different parts of the country as the genre expanded to the South.”

To be perfectly honest, other than her radio hits (and the super-catchy “Baby I got your money” chorus on an ODB track) I am not too familiar with Kelis’ discography. When I heard that she has a new album coming produced by TV On the Radio’s Dave Sitek I started paying attention, and a preview of what’s to come has been released in the form of a new single, “Jerk Ribs”.

The song features a tight production by Sitek, with a percussion and horn section that particularly stands out. Kelis’ singing here very much reminds me of an 80s Michael Jackson without the James Brown-esque shouts – a subdued, smooth, but no less attention-grabbing performance. Needless to say, I dig it.

The album will be released via Dave Sitek’s label, Federal Prism.

Definitely worth a watch.

“Not too long ago it looked like New York’s glory days as a center for dance music had passed. As the birthplace of disco and hip-hop and the home of legendary nightclubs like the Paradise Garage, Limelight and Twilo, the city has long been part of the cultural fabric. But as the notoriously grimy city of the late 20th century transformed into the sleek and hyper-gentrified metropolis of today, its thriving underground lost its foothold.”
