In 1977, Nike’s Geoff Hollister founded the running dynasty Athletics West. The club became a mecca, attracting gold medalists, record breakers, distance runners and sprinters. They all headed for the Pacific Northwest. All to see if they had what it takes… all to train in the cold, and rain. 50.9 inches of it a year. Geoff designed a hoodie just for them. His day job was in apparel, and he came up with a hoodie with a half zip to cut weight and a fitted, multi-panel hood. It was the first running-specific hoodie. It became the AW77.

After the success of “Voltaire and Islam” and “Goethe and Islam“, the last series from Salihara’s Ramadhan Lecture is held with the theme “Soekarno and Islam“.

Soekarno (1901 – 1970), a founder and proclaimer of Indonesia’s Independence, has his own views upon Islam. He tries to search for the “Islam’s spirit” and differentiates it with “reckless Islam“, unraveling the the teachings of Islam that is pro-development and strengthens the nation. What’s more important is that Soekarno tries to differentiate the relationship between Islam and a nation; he talks about secular experience di Turkey under the reign of Mustafa Kemal Attaturk, and the appearance of Wahabi from the Saudi Arabia Kingdom. He has strong views about the freedom of practicing religion, from the issue of Ahmadiyah to the prohibition of coercion in the name of religion.

Olafur Eliasson, an Icelandic artist, is now collaborating with ARoS Aarhus kuntmuseum to make one of his artworks come true. The project named “Your Rainbow Panorama”

The main idea is to build a large glass walkway, measuring 52 metres in diameter and formed in colour spectrum on the museum’s rooftop. The visitors will be able to move around in 150 metres, circular panoramic path with 360º views of the surrounding city.

Mr. Eliasson’s art project is chosen over other five proposals from the competition because the judges said :

“The project complies in a brilliant way with the competition’s aim to convert ARoS’ rooftop surface to a unique artistic and architectural sight of international stature. The proposal creates an extremely beautiful and poetic place, which unifies the panoramic view from the roof with an exceptional artistic-architectural dimension, contributing to the development of a new understanding of the visual art interface of architecture. It also establishes a strong identity-creating landmark for ARoS and Århus city”

Couple of posts down, you will see one of my recent post about Parklife. You might see something really interesting with one of the image. Well if you don’t, shame on you! I’m talking about those paper greeneries that if you really think about it, how come there’s someone want to spend their time to make them. Well there’s someone indeed, and his name is Benjamin ‘Benja’ Harney. This self-taught paper maestro created a number of paper installations for Hermes, Topshop, Commonwealth Bank and many more. I encountered his Hermes wings end of last year and I still can’t believe that all of those wings are made from paper. And to be honest, it’s not going to shocked me if his house is made from paper as well.

The British shoe artist legend, Dame Vivienne Westwood, showcased her 200 shoe design collection. The exhibition titled ‘Vivienne Westwood Shoes: An Exhibition 1973- 2010‘ was held at Selfridges Ultra Lounge, London, England. The event started on August 25 and will end on September 22. A spokesperson from the department store said: “The exhibition traces the exceptional success of Westwood’s career to date and presents her outstanding artistic individuality. Illustrating her defiance of the rules of wearability and convention, the exhibition is also evidence of her uncompromising quest for superb craftsmanship and attention to detail.”
Among the display, there are her iconic Pirate Boots which remains popular among fashionistas and Mock-Crock Elevated Gilllies in which Naomi Campbell famously tripped on the catwalk. Westwood is certainly known for her extreme designs. She explained, “Shoes must have very high heels and platforms to put women’s beauty on a pedestal.”

Dogfish head brewery have created a dark beer called Bitches Brew to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the ground-breaking Miles Davis album of the same name. Apparently it is designed “as the ultimate partner for chili or spicy curry chicken” and is best enjoyed “sipped cool, not cold, from a snifter or red wine glass while listening to the Bitches Brew album.” for those unlucky enough to be far away from the U.S., the good people of npr have tasted the beer just for you.

You might have seen the Sebago Nexus Project video by Jake Davis running around fashion blogs since last June. Sebago Nexus Project is a project by Ronnie Fieg which bring together 6 influential bloggers (Ronnie Fieg, Marcus Troy, Joshua Kissi of Street Etiquette, William Yan, Greg Weinsten of Culture Shoq, and director Jake Davis) to redesign the classic footwear Sebago. Two months after the video, we can see several designs starting to emerge, one is Marcus Troy’s Dockside Boat Shoes and the second one is Jake Davis Docksides & DT Mids shoes. Four classic designs using materials and colours that never been used by Sebago before, and all of these shoes are available at davidZ.com. Keep checking Whiteboard for updates on the other designs.

This ensemble of Sean Foran (piano), Pat Marchisella (bass), and John Parker (drums) form what people know as Misinterprotato. Somewhat atmospheric, much captivating, and intelligent, they bring a new attitude in combining modern jazz, ambient music, avant-garde rock, free improvisation, and contemporary classical music. The latest release “The Gentle War” creates what they call shape shifting, with a touch of rhythmic interactions and gentle melodic statements. But we simply love their intricate collaboration with Topology – a contemporary classical group – for the “Healthy”.
