Taking place in 1972, Dark Shadows is the tale of cursed vampire Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp), as he deals with the perks of the 70s after being inadvertently freed from two centuries of entombment.

Or perhaps it’s about his efforts to rejuvenate the family business, as his descendants (played by Michelle Pfeiffer, Jonny Lee Miller, Chloe Moretz, etc) are near bankrupt. Or perhaps it’s about him fending off the romantic advances of the witch (Eva Green) who cursed him in the first place. Or…. It’s about him finding a new yet not so new love interest (Bella Heathcote).

Or… Well, you get the picture.

Although it’s definitely not impossible for a 113-minute movie to contain all of those plot threads (and a few more), director Tim Burton and his writers fail to prioritize in Dark Shadows, and results feel gruesomely uneven. Subplots and backstories are inserted only to destroy the rhythm of the story, and transitions from referential humor to acts of brutality create a glaring imbalance in tonality. The movie, for all of its visual flair, is simply too unfocused to be enjoyable.

But that isn’t the only sin. With its main character living out of original time, Dark Shadows also relies too heavily on fish-out-of-water jokes. A few work, but most of them definitely fall flat. As a whole, these lame attempts to extract laughs fail to salvage Dark Shadows from being a total borefest.

Colour in Clay is a 1941 short film released by the British Council Film. This 10 minute film is basically a documentation about the production line of pottery inside the Wedgwood company.

First we are introduced to scenes of greenery in England, with mild colored flowers subtly moving along with the wind. Then the narration takes us to a factory with skilled men and women working in the production line. Then we are shown the different processes they went through to create different products. Plates, cups, vases, are all created by hands with different kinds of methods; molding, sculpting, and carving. The product are later painted with finishing to get it’s glossy texture, and drawn with pictures of flowers we see earlier, using a free-hand technique (yes, they’re magically drawn by hand by fairies!).

The film’s orchestral scoring and narration was of a very common style at the time (the intro reminded me of 40s Tom and Jerry Cartoons I used to watch as a kid… well I still do actually). The commentary tells what goes on behind this ‘modern’ ceramics, but the only thing modern about the process seen is the fact that the driving of the wheel in the pottery machine is powered by electricity, the rest is in the hand of the craftsmen working in the factory. To us living in the digital world, these craftsmen are artist!

AFTERMATH: a solo exhibition by the award-winning Indonesian photojournalist Kemal Jufri, opened last wednesday in Komunitas Salihara, Pasar Minggu. The exhibition held in the gallery on May 16th to 29th was commenced with some poem reading, and an audio-visual presentation accompanied with live musical performance.

The event started at 7pm inside the black-box theatre accommodating to it’s full capacity. The ceremony was opened by Debra H. Yatim with some poem reading, written by the photographer’s wife, Dina Purita Antonio-Jufri, continued by a screening of photos from the exhibition, compiled into a an audio-visual presentation by Heru Admadja and I B Charisma. The video uses 3 dimensional effects, adding depth to the photos and creating dramatic transitions between them. This visual was accompanied with live performance by Acehnese ethnomusicologist Nyak Ina Raseuki and cellist Dimawan Krisnowo Adji, creating eerie but beautiful sounds, making the presentation more moving and complete.

The exhibition itself, held inside the circular gallery and curated by Galeri Foto Jurnalistik Antara Director Oscar Matuloh, is of photos taken after the Merapi eruption in 2010 and the Aceh tsunami in 2004. These photos give a visual experience on how people deal with catastrophes; a poignant reminder on what is lost during these calamities. The event itself aims to raise funds for the victims of these disasters; all the profits from sales of the photographs will be donated to help victims in areas around the country. The photographer stated during his greeting in the ceremony, that it is his duty as a photographer to give a visual report on what took place during these hard times to the public, and with his capacity as a renowned photojournalist, this exhibition is his way of doing charity.

Kemal Jufri’s career as a photojournalist started in 1996 as a contract photographer for Agence France Presse. He left two years later to contribute to Asiaweek magazine until 2001. Since then he cover stories around South-East Asia for world’s renowned media such ase Newsweek, TIME Magazine, The New York Times, and many more. During his 15-year career he has participated in exhibitions around the world, and gained numerous honors including second prize at the 2011 World Press Photo Awards.

The exhibition is totally worth a visit. Enjoy and help in any way you can. For further info, go to Salihara’s site.

As the writer and director for “Battle of Algiers”, Gillo Pontecorvo, has created a plot where it is based on the real event of the Algerian Wars on 1954 throughout 1962, who fought for the independence for their country against the French Government in North Africa. The Algerian Wars, is mostly known as an important decolonization wars which involves terrorism and torture from both the FNL and the French Army. The history that is told in this movie is adapted from facts that is written by historians. Pontecorvo has captured a historic moment with a beautiful accuracy with the tradition of Italian Neo Realism and French New Wave. The fact that he casted non professional actors creates the authentic relationship between the story and the acting. The visual style of Battle of Algiers involves a lot of experimental uses of the camera, the use of black and white are appropriate as it creates a more nostalgic, documentary feel and creates the impression that the film consists of archival footages.

A film commissioned by the Algerian government that shows the Algerian revolution from both sides. The French foreign legion has left Vietnam in defeat and has something to prove. The Algerians are seeking independence. The two clash. The torture used by the French is contrasted with the Algerian’s use of bombs in soda shops. A look at war as a nasty thing that harms and sullies everyone who participates in it.

Islands frontman Nick Diamonds was asked to collaborate along in the performance on vocal and synth. In the midst of the gig, El-P uttered: “Rest in peace, MCA. Rest in peace, Maurice Sendak.” With the dazzling stage lighting, El-P totally brought up the show to a whole new level.

About 50 chairs were displayed May 17th in the Partners & Spade studio in lower Manhattan. But these chairs are not your ordinary piece of furniture; they’re designed specifically for children. These chairs are not just unique in their scale, but they were designed to function well with kids; some are rockers, some with fun colors, and some are stackable.

The exhibition is from the collection of Patrick Parrish’s, the guy behind Mondo Cane design store. This exhibition is a response to the Museum of Modern Art’s latest exhibition; Century of the Child. These chairs represents designs from 1890s to 1990s; one was a design by the famous architect Alvar Aalto he did in 1930s. Their different time of design and origins displayed different technique, style, and manner in treating the materials. Some are very functional, while others are highly decorative.

The chairs are on display until June 10 and for sale in the store and online. Some of these are one-of-a-kind, so the hefty price tag are quite understandable. Check out the rest of this adorable collection right here!

Harry Clarke’s rendition of Edgar Allan Poe’s classic short story “The Tell-Tale Heart” was the first animation to be X-rated in Great Britain. Clarke introduced the short film with evocative narration: “This story is told through the eyes of a madman.” Following Clarke’s earlier illustrations for Poe’s “Tales of Mystery and Imagination”, this imaginative animation was vividly filled up with haunting mystique. Audiences are invited to experience a motion-picture production that was tensely packed with thrilling score, allowing your heart to thump in an erratic tempo. This 1953 cartoon was expressed in an enticing dark vibe, with storming emphasis narration by English actor James Mason. The notion behind this abstraction will trigger you to dig deeper into one of Poe’s highly regarded works.
