It’s been a while since M. Ward released his last album in 2009, titled ‘Hold Time’, and finally after 3 years, M. Ward has finally planned a forthcoming album titled ‘A Wasteland Companion’, that’s due on April 10th. While we still need to wait a few months away, M. Ward generously released one of his track from ‘A Wasteland Companion with an animated video of ‘The First Time I Ran Away‘. His usual soothing voice paired with another animated video, by Joel Trussel, is how we remembered his previous animated video for ‘Chinese Translation’, also by Joel Trussel. Though it tells a different tale, we can see a pattern of similar tone color and enjoyable visuals of its characters, such as how the visuals literally follows the lyrics. Give it a listen!

To be cool, everybody wants to be ‘cool’, but what does the term ‘cool’ actually mean? “There is no algorithm to define cool, you just know it when you see it”. R+I Creative presents to you “The Pursuit Of Cool”, a short series about hedonism, sharing and meeting cool people with stories. This short series will expose the people who will share their stories in life and how they are cool not because of what they have, but by how they achieve it. Some of the series has been uploaded to their vimeo account, one of them is on Savoia, the tailor, who since he was young, had prepared his father’s garments for his job. He learned the term ‘cool’ through his father’s dressing rituals and the ‘magic’ that is his father. And another video is on Coltrane Curtis, who talks about the influence of Jazz musicians on his personal style, both describes that to be cool you don’t need the recognition from everyone, being cool doesn’t always means following trends or what brand you wear, its how you wear it and define yourself through it. Now that’s cool.

Sure we all agree that there is no boundaries for creativity, as last night Ok-Go showed us their creativity by singing us a song about primary color!

Known for their creative and crazy music videos (like treadmill choreography and domino effect), now Ok-Go teamed up again with Sesame Street to teach children about primary color with their style (and they named it as Ok-Go color). The video reminds us of Ok-Go’s trademark in their music videos: some stop-motion effect, using white-painted wall as the background, and simple but epic music videos. You can see all four members of Ok-Go’s are wearing primary color outfit as they moving along and shouting “YELLOW!” or “BLUE!” or “GREEN!”.

Well… this is surely will make kids dancing along to their song, because the music video seems fun and full of primary color. Check out the video below and play this Ok-Go’s game about primary color. Don’t forget, Ok-Go will release their new music video for “Needing/Getting” on Sunday, 5February!

On February 7th Blonde Redhead’s newly found label, Asa Wa Kuru, will release their first record! Titled We are the Works in Progress, an all star packed compilation album featuring artists such as Deerhunter, Broadcast, Ryuchi Sakamoto, John Maus, Terry Riley and of course Blonde Redhead themselves. From the line up we can sort of see that this album is going to be a mind-bending one, with artists that constantly pushes the musical boundaries within their own genre’s sphere. Right now Deerhunter has released their track for the album and it is a pretty heavy one. Titled Curve, it is an ambient piece where delays softly swell as it envelopes the listeners (check it out below). Something to take note about We are the Works in Progress, it is a benefit album in which all proceeds will go into helping Japan rebuild after the earthquake and tsunami that took place in 2011. It’s a good cause, but you should just get the record because it looks like it will be a great one.

Emi has exclusively created five works encapsulating her signature basis of inspiration shunga, a Japanese form of erotic art.
Emi studied realistic painting techniques with established painter Mineko Ando from a very young age, and graduated in 1991 with a degree in Fine Art. Since then, she has risen and emerged in eminent galleries and art fairs around the world.

Bernhard Leitner, is a known Austrian artist who makes sound sculptures and sound installations, his works deals with the audio-physical experience of spaces and object which determined in form and content by movement of sound. He studied architecture and had visioned himself applying sound in an installation space, he undertakes his projects as a scientific research by studying frequencies, volumes, movements and their impact on the body. Out of all his sound projects, his first one is called ‘Sound cube’ in 1969.

In ‘Sound cube’ Leitner gathered his research findings in sketches, where he explores the use of a space for how sounds would travel and how it’ll be received. His sketches is really descriptive of his research, in one sketch we can see how there’s a four different level of speed, pitch or direction, another sketch where the sound source is a loudspeaker that fades out as it travels through the room. Other sketches involved various sound travel in the same space, but with a more precise direction such as a circular or rectangular motion. It’s really interesting how a sound is conceived according to its fitting in the space provided, and Leitner’s other projects and sound installations has explored it in many ways possible, take a look at his other works HERE

Are you fascinated by installation art such as antiVJ’s 3Destruct? Then, check out another installation art by duo-based in Detroit. This project called Nervous Structure (field).

Nervous Structure (field) is created by Annica Cuppetelli and Cristobal Mendoza who collaborated to create an interactive installation. It consists of three elements: a structure from strings and fabrics, an interactive video projection, and the viewer’s interaction.

When you move, the computer software will interpret your movements. It causes the strings, which are illuminated by the projection, to move along as if they were blown by wind (even though just a small gesture and you are not near from the strings). This effect happened because of the combination between the projection, the strings, and the shadows that created on the background. This project installed in 2011, at inLight (Richmond, VA)

For our 14th Roundtable Session, we had the honor to interview our minister of tourism and creative economy, Ibu Mari E. Pangestu to discuss the state of our growing creative industry.

This sudden introduction to a new position in the government, forced many to question, what is creative economy? What relevancy does it have to the improvement to our own economy?

Creative economy is an actual term popularized by media businessman John Howkins. By definition the idea behind creative economy is an analysis derived based on creative people, creative industries and creative cities where people’s creativity and exploration of self-identity, art, and innovation influences the improvement of a country’s economy. Different from the other industries whose basis is natural resources, creative economy is a sector whose main basis is human resources and its unlimited source of ideas and knowledge.

Many may think Indonesia’s creative industry has only started to flourish, where in reality, our creative industries have long been taken for granted, for years, our creative streaked lied in the traditional mediums of batik, and handicrafts and only recently the recognition in architecture, film, music, and design. According to Indonesia’s Finance Today, Indonesia’s creative industry has contributed to 7.2 percent of Indonesia’s GDP by 2010, which means it is a very small percentage that influences the market value of our standard of living. In a larger outlook, these creative industries is regarded as a force and a potential for the creative individuals to generate income and employment through the exploitation of intellectual property.

Mr. Yudhi Soerjoatmodjo once involved in British Council for building the public awareness of the concept of creative economy mentioned in an article “it’s important to translate the creative industries into something that the government can understand, which is through numbers and figures,” because supporting the creative economy leads to unconventional ways to improve the overall economy that can help raise our standard of living.

Ultimately, a healthy creative economy gives positive opportunities for those seeking to dive into the creative world of art, film, music and so on, without having to face doubtful questions as “how can you earn a living working in the creative field?”

What can we do to harvest this growth?
