Komunitas Salihara is an art center established since August 2008. Established by a number of writers, artist, journalist, and enthusiasts of arts, Komunitas Salihara that is located in South Jakarta have featured over 90 performances of dance, theater, music and literature; these renowned performances and individuals are partly from overseas. Salihara Blackbox Theater is the only one that currently exist in Indonesia.

Additionaly, Komunitas Salihara became a gathering place for various interest groups, such as young architects, philosophy enthusiast, translator, and others.

Komunitas Salihara can also be referred as a cultural center in comparison with various art centers in Indonesia, most of which are owned and funded from both central or country state government. In contrast to various art centers Komunitas Salihara has long-term programs made by the Board of Curators, which consist of Indonesia’s leading writers and artist.

Salihara’s vision is to maintain freedom of thought and expression, respect for difference and diversity, as well as cultivate and spread an artistic and intellectual wealth. We need to affirm this vision, because today in Indonesia, which has been engaged in electoral democracy in the last two decades, freedom of thought and expression is still often threatened from above (i.e. from the state apparatus) and from the side (i.e from the public sector itself, particularly radical groups that uses the name religion and race)
