White Shoes and the Couples Company’s Stunning Performance at Goethehaus

White Shoes & the Couples Company probably wouldn’t need any introduction by now. But for those who are uninitiated, they are Indonesia’s most celebrated Indie band, ever since exploding into the scene with their eponymous album in 2005. Last Friday, the beloved Indie darling performed live to an enthusiastic crowd at Goethehaus, accompanied by the release of Europe tour journal.

The highlight is definitely vocalist Aprilia Apsari. Her strong and husky vocal is magnetic and commanding as she dance and prowl on the stage. In between songs, Apsari seems to enjoy interacting and laughing along with the audience as one would to a friend. Of course, other members of the band also had their own shining moment. Drummer John Navid and Cellist Ricky Surya Virgana are both electrifying with their brief solo instrumental piece.

During the brief intermission, the crowd is treated to behind the scene of the band’s journey during the European tour. And almost immediately, the band is back with the second set, driving the crowd delirious with winsome hits such as Aksi Kucing. Here, band members, especially Apsari, let loose of any inhibitions and prance around wildly on stage. The band also couldn’t have wished for a better audience. The energetic crowd cheers, claps and even sings along without any prompting.

Cynics will be quick to point out that the popularity of the band, which is influenced by sounds from the 30s and 70s, is build on nostalgia of old songs. However, nostalgia itself is based on personal association of the past. One interesting fact to point out is all of the members are born in the early 80s. And judging from the crowd’s faces, most of them are in their twenties.

In this stressful and quick pace modern life, any individuals who yearn to seek solace is given. Back to a slower time where one is able to contemplate and enjoy the activities he/she loves to do. Fortunately for all of us, White Shoes & the Couple Company is here to bridge that needs.

Without a doubt, none of the audience left the venue disappointed. If any, it will only fuel fans’ hunger of experiencing such exhilarating performance from the band in the coming future.
